Friday Faves

Hi friends! The weekend is here! What do you have going on? Any fun plans? I was supposed to head to a wine tasting with friends, but our usual babysitters weren’t available. I could have asked the fam to watch them, but they have events going on throughout the day, so instead of having overlapping childcare (and feeling like I’m inconveniencing the world even though I’m sure they don’t mind), I’m just going to skip out. With the change of plans, I’m going to use it as an opportunity to do some fun and festive things with the girls. (And I’ll have my own wine tasting while they’re asleep and I’m watching The Princess Switch for the second time. Not even a little sorry.) P’s class has a cocoa and cookies party which should be super cute, and I’m taking both girls plus one of each of their friends to see Ralph Breaks the Internet. Has anyone seen it?

Other than that, I’ll be continuing to hide the arriving Christmas presents (I’m running out of spots in the house haha), catching a Peloton Live DJ class, and packing for our Disney trip! I’m ready for that Christmas churro.

I’d love to hear what you’re up to this weekend!

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party. This is where I share some of my favorite finds, wears, reads, and eats from the week. It’s always fun to hear what you’re loving, too, so please shout out any faves in the comments below!

Christmas decor:

– ALL the Christmas decor. Initially, I wasn’t going to bring our Christmas stuff to Tucson. I figured we’d get a little tree – just like last time we were in Tucson for a few months and arrived on Christmas Eve! – and call it good. I’m so, so glad the Pilot convinced me to bring it. The girls and I had a jolly time drinking cocoa and decorating the tree, and putting out all of the usual decor. Not a single ornament has been broken thus far and by writing that, I’m sure we’ll lose at least a handful in the next week.

Christmas decor 2

Christmas decor

Christmas decor 3

Real talk: our decorations have been up for almost 2 weeks now, but I finally feel like it’s appropriate to post these pics. Heh.

Christmas decor 4

(Ps I can’t wait to pain this horrible red wall but for the holiday season, it works.)

– I’m in the market for a ridiculous inflatable for the yard and have my eye on this one.

Read, watch, listen:

– I started China Rich Girlfriend, and just like the first book, I’m loving it so far. The books are so scandalous and intriguing, and the various plot lines are like the best soap opera. I definitely recommend the series so far if you’re looking for a fun and fluffy read. (I did see the first movie, and liked it, but the book is way better.)

A great article with the founder of Beautycounter.

This cracked me up.

– The Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack. I know, I know, I’m late to the party. Since I’ve officially emerged from my “Hamilton and Greatest Showman on repeat” cloud, I started listening to some new-to-me soundtracks. It took me a little while to get into this one, but once I Wiki-ed the plot line, I could listen to the whole soundtrack and totally cried. “Waving Through a Window” and “You Will Be Found” are my very faves.

Beauty + fashion + health:

This camo sweatshirt is cute for life (with a pair of leggings and low tops) and it’s also amazing for sleep. It’s insanely soft and cozy.

Magnesium oil

Magnesium oil. I have a whole post going up about this next week, but I had some hormone testing done and was surprised with the results. To help with adrenal fatigue, I’m really focusing on decreasing stress, promoting sleep, and eating as well as I can. This magnesium oil has been a game changer with sleep and some of the mental stress I’ve been feeling. About 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium, which is an important mineral. A lack of magneium can cause neurological effects (like insomnia and anxiety) and muscular effects (like spasms and pain). I spray it on my feet at night (it tingles a little) and wash it off 20 minutes later, then sleep like a BABY. I haven’t had such vivid dreams in a looooong time.

– Been wearing this lip gloss in fig a lot lately! The color looks super dark in the container, but it’s actually very sheer and a lovely plum shade for winter.

Fitness:

An oldie but a sweaty holiday-themed Tabata workout.

How to know what health and fitness information to follow.

A high volume interval training workout.

More reasons to have protein before bed.

Happy Friday, friends!

Your Best Low Carb Fast Food Options: A Guide for Keto on the Go

Let’s be real for a moment: you’re not always going to have a home cooked meal prepared and waiting for you.

Sometimes you need to depend on a fast food chain to keep hunger at bay, scanning the menu for a healthy option.

However, when you add in a highly restrictive diet like Keto, Paleo or low-carb, the task can seem impossible.

Forget it. I’m screwed. Order me a burger and chocolate shake and I’ll get back on track tomorrow.”

WAIT!

You don’t have to throw in the towel quite yet.

Just because you pulled into the drive-thru doesn’t mean I’ll let you fall off that low-carb wagon. In this Guide, I’ll tell you exactly what to order so you can stick to Keto. And a couple other options in case my first suggestion isn’t jiving.

To start, let’s discuss some general tips when ordering low-carb at a fast food chain. Or you can click below to jump to any specific restaurant, in case you are reading this in line and need to make up your mind quickly.

Don’t fret, instead click here:

Quick Tips for Low-Carb Fast Food Dining

If you’re interested in learning about the Keto Diet, make sure to read our MASSIVE guide on the subject. We have included everything but the kitchen sink in the article. And in the next update, I’m getting that sink in there.

Personally, I don’t think carbs deserve the bad rep they currently have, as I lay out in our “How to pick the perfect diet for you” article – but that’s neither here nor there.

Instead, we’re gonna tackle it as if you’re somebody that thrives under a low-carb environment but has to eat fast food for whatever reason!

Keep these rules in mind for dining out while following a low-carb diet.

  • Ditch the bun. Oftentimes, making a low-carb meal at a restaurant is as simple as saying “no bun please.” And really, it’s pretty much required if you’re following Keto. For example, including the bun on the McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder adds an extra 30 grams of carbs. Some forms of Keto recommend 20 grams of net carbs (total g of carbs minus g of fiber). Lettuce wraps are your friend.
  • Focus on meat, veggies, and cheese. Carbs can creep into all sorts of items in fast food. Take an order of coleslaw from KFC. Sure, there are veggies in there all right. But it also has a lot of carbs, 14 grams for one serving. 10 of which, is sugar! Order simple things like meat, veggies, and cheese, which will generally have less hidden carbs.
  • Avoid fried or breaded food. You would think that fried would be fine with Keto, because of the fat involved. However, they’ll add flour into the mix (meaning carbs) so stay away from mozzarella sticks or fried chicken. Grilled over fried, everytime.
  • Salads can be problematic. If you find a salad that’s just veggies, meat, and cheese, go all in! However, you’ll run into trouble with the added croutons, dried fruit, or sugar covered nuts. Be careful and check ingredients. Also, the dressing can be loaded with sugar. Speaking of dressing…
  • Condiments on the side. One packet of Honey Mustard Sauce from Chick-fil-A has 10 grams of sugar. That could be a lot of your carb allowance for the day. Ask for all sauces and dressings on the side, and stick to fattier options like Caesar, ranch, and oil when you can. Chick-fil-A’s Garlic and Herb Ranch sauce only has 1 gram of carbs per packet.
  • It’s okay to special order. Often times the low-carb solution at a fast food joint is there, you just have to ask for it. “Can I have the chicken salad, but instead of the normal dressing it comes with, can I just have ranch?” Restaurants want to help you. It’s okay to ask for what you want. You are special.

Consider these above highlights for navigating fast food under a Keto Diet or low carb diet. Want to be told exactly what to order? We got you.

In line? Staring at the menu and can’t figure out what’s low-carb?

Order the following, just make sure you look at both calorie intake along with carb count!

It’s not gonna help much if you stick low carb but eat 5,000 calories worth of fast food! So make sure the calorie count fits into your daily allotment whenever possible.

Low-Carb Options at Boston Market

Because you choose your sides here, it’s relatively easy to get a meal at Boston Market that will comply with Keto. They also have a nutrition calculator online to help with macro ratios. However, Keto at Boston Market does mean you are going to have to pass on the dinner roll or side of cornbread.  Pick the following:

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Three-Piece Dark: Lot’s of protein, decent fat, and no carbs.
    • Calories: 300
    • Protein: 37g
    • Net Carbs: 1g
    • Fat: 16g
  •  Green Beans: Keep it simple.
    • Calories: 90cals
    • Protein: 1g
    • Net Carbs: 4g
    • Fat: 5g
  • Fresh Steamed Vegetables: Following our “simple” strategy.
    • Calories: 60
    • Protein: 2g
    • Net Carbs: 4g
    • Fat: 3.5g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Turkey: Lot’s of protein, but less fat than the chicken order.
    • Calories: 230
    • Protein: 43g
    • Net Carbs: 0g
    • Fat: 6g
  • Caesar Salad: While it has some carbs, it’s not considerable when weighed against other options.
    • Calories: 150
    • Protein: 3g
    • Net Carbs: 6g
    • Fat: 13g

Low-Carb Options at Burger King

The name of the game at Burger King is “no bun please.” Luckily, their nutrition calculator lets you customize your order, showing you exactly how many carbs you’ll save by removing the bun. For us nerds who love data, that’s awesome. Although I’ll gripe that this customization functionality doesn’t work on BK’s salads.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Double Cheeseburger (no bun, no ketchup): It’s simple, but simple works. You’re basically getting meat, cheese, and a pickle.
    • Calories: 250
    • Protein: 20g
    • Net Carbs: <1g
    • Fat: 19g
  •  Garden Side Salad (no croutons): We’ll make up for the lack of veggies here.
    • Calories: 60
    • Protein: 4g
    • Net Carbs: 2g
    • Fat: 4g
  • Ken’s Ranch Dressing: The fattiest dressing they have.
    • Calories: 260
    • Protein: 1g
    • Net Carbs: 2g
    • Fat: 28g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Grilled Chicken Sandwich (no bun, with mayo): In case you don’t feel like beef.
    • Calories: 270
    • Protein: 30g
    • Net Carbs: 2g
    • Fat: 16g

Low-Carb Options at Chipotle

Chipotle is a personal favorite of mine, as it’s one of a few chains where you are able to order a “paleo-ish” meal. That, and it’s easy to follow low-carb here. If there’s a Chipotle near you, it could be a great resource for a quick and painless Keto meal. Scope out Chipotle’s nutrition calculator here, which will cover any customization you can imagine.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Salad Bowl (with Carnitas): order it with Fajita Vegetables, Fresh Tomato Salsa, Sour Cream, Cheese, and YES for Guacamole.
    • Calories: 710
    • Protein: 34g
    • Net Carbs: 12
    • Fat: 51g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations: Stick to the Salad Bowl. However, go ahead and pick out any meat you’d like. Carnitas just has the highest fat content, which is why we recommend it for a Keto Diet. Steak and chicken are also fine.

Low-Carb Options at Dunkin’ Donuts

Proving that you can get a low-carb meal pretty much everywhere, we have Dunkin’ Donuts. As a nerd that grew up in New England, Dunkin Donuts will always hold a special place in my heart.

Granted, you won’t be ordering a donut (sorry). Also, for drinks, stick with black coffee or unsweetened tea. Everything else is a sugar landmine.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Sausage Egg and Cheese Bagel (no bagel): Sausage and egg are a breakfast staple. Plus, cheese!
    • Calories: 370
    • Protein: 16g
    • Net Carbs: 3g
    • Fat: 33g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Egg, Sausage and Cheese Wake-Up Wrap: If you’re following a strict Keto protocol, stick to the sausage and egg bagel sandwich, sans bagel. If you have some leeway with your carb allowance, you might be able to get away with this wrap which will net you 14 grams of carbs. If the Carb Police arrests you for this one, I warned you.
    • Calorie: 290
    • Protein: 11g
    • Net Carbs: 14g
    • Fat: 20g

Low-Carb Options at McDonald’s

If one image is associated with fast food, it’s the arches of McDonald’s. In America, you’re never too far from one. Or really, even in most of the world. Can you be low-carb here? Yes! Plus, like Burger King, their nutrition calculator includes all the bunless customizations you can think up. I like that.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Bacon Ranch Grilled Chicken Salad (Use the Balsamic Vinaigrette listed below for a 9g carb meal): It’s mostly greens, grilled chicken and a little bacon. No customization required. Your salad comes in under 400 calories.
    • Calories: 320
    • Protein: 42g
    • Net Carbs: 6g
    • Fat: 14g
  • Newman’s Own Low Fat Balsamic Vinaigrette: The lowest calorie dressing found at McDonald’s.
    • Calories: 35
    • Protein: 0g
    • Net Carbs: 3g
    • Fat: 2.5g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (no bun, no ketchup): Lot’s of fat, decent protein, and little carbs. You can order any burger on the menu this way with similar results.
    • Calories: 590
    • Protein: 45g
    • Net Carbs: 4g
    • Fat: 43g
  • Artisan Grilled Chicken Sandwich (no bun; vinaigrette carb content is negligible so go for it): Not a lot of fat with this order, but very low-carb with a decent source of protein.
    • Calories: 160
    • Protein: 29g
    • Net Carbs: 1g
    • Fat: 4g
  • Sausage McMuffin with Egg (no muffin): I know, it seems sacrilegious to lose the muffin. However, it’s the only way to keep the order low-carb.
    • Calories: 340
    • Protein: 16g
    • Net Carbs: 3g
    • Fat: 29g

Low-Carb Options at Starbucks

At this point in civilization, there’s a Starbucks on the corner of every Starbucks. Which is good if you follow the Keto Diet, because you can make an order from this chain work. If you get coffee or tea, keep it unsweetened. If you want some cream, ask for “heavy cream.” They’ll give you the full-fat version they have in the back. With Keto, always go full fat.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Sous Vide Egg Bites, Bacon & Gruyere: The lowest carb count of the egg bite options. A great protein to carb ratio. Plus fat. Always fat.
    • Calories: 320
    • Protein: 42g
    • Net Carbs: 6g
    • Fat: 14g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Chicken & Greens Caesar Salad Bowl: Greens, chicken and a fatty dressing. This will work in a pinch.
    • Calories: 340
    • Protein: 19g
    • Net Carbs: 7g
    • Fat: 25g

Low-Carb Options at Subway

It’s estimated that 18.5% of all fast food restaurants are a Subway.[1]The more you know.  The good news is, it’s pretty straightforward to order a low-carb meal here. Every sub they sell can also be made into a salad, forgoing the bun.

Go ahead and ask for cheese (duh) and get plenty of veggies. Get ‘em. Also, bacon and guacamole are your Keto friends. For dressings? Stick with oil and vinegar.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Tuna Salad: This will give you the most fat for the fewest carbs. Plus, a solid serving of protein. Nutrition info below is with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, onion, green peppers, cucumbers, and olives, with oil and vinegar as dressing.
    • Calories: 500
    • Protein: 15g
    • Net Carbs: 7g
    • Fat: 45g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Oven Roasted Chicken: If tuna isn’t your jam, go ahead and get the chicken. Follow the same idea as the tuna salad and grab it with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, onion, green peppers, cucumbers, and olives, with oil and vinegar as dressing. Also, feel free to add bacon and guacamole to increase your calories. Your nutrition info will look like this if ordered as above:
    • Calories: 490
    • Protein: 24g
    • Net Carbs: 11g.
    • Fat: 35.5g

Low-Carb Options at Wendy’s

I’ve always been amused by Wendy’s, probably because they make square burger patties. Wendy’s, you cray. You can also get a decent low-carb meal here.

Our Low-Carb Favorite:

  • Southwest Avocado Chicken Salad: It is nice not to have to special order anything. Go ahead and eat this salad as is. Lots of fat and protein and low-carb(ish).
    • Calories: 600
    • Protein: 42g
    • Net Carbs: 11g
    • Fat: 41g

Other Low-Carb Recommendations:

  • Baconator (no bun, no ketchup): If a salad isn’t what you’re after, a meal of bacon, meat, and cheese can keep you going. I wouldn’t recommend this all the time (see the calories), but the beauty of Keto is, a pile of meat and cheese can get you by.
    • Calories: 760
    • Protein: 53g
    • Net Carbs: 2g.
    • Fat: 60g

Eating fast food doesn’t mean you have to give up on keto or low-carb

Just about anywhere you go can offer you a low-carb meal. We just covered 8 popular restaurants and provided exactly what to order to stick with the Keto Diet.

Even if you find yourself at a restaurant not covered in our guide, DON’T PANIC!

Stick to the advice at the start of this Guide, and remember, it’s okay to request a special order. The staff at restaurants want to make you happy, so good ahead and tell them what would make you happy.

The good news is, this is getting easier and easier. As the Keto and the low-carb trend continues to skyrocket in popularity, more and more chains are working to accommodate.

Go ahead and let the store know about your low-carb requirement. They’ll listen. And the next time you stop by, there might be something on the menu specifically designed to meet your needs. That’s how you end up with The Low Carb Thickburger at Carl’s Jr/Hardee’s. Capitalism at work!

Another note: If you’re following a low-carb or Keto Diet, my GUESS would be that you’re doing so for weight loss goals.

What can I say, I’m a mind reader.

Also, you look nice today.

No matter what nutritional strategy you pick for weight loss, navigating your food choices will be critical. As we say in our Guide on Healthy Eating, 80-90% of your success will depend on how you eat. Low-carb or non-low-carb, real food should be at the center of your fitness plan.

If this stresses you out, we can help!

If you find yourself on the road frequently, and constantly finding your health and fitness goals sabotaged by travel, a hectic life, or just being too damn busy, I hear ya.

This is why we launched our own private online coaching program that works with you to meet your goals! We help busy people like you to structure a complete life overhaul: handcrafted workout routines, accountability, mindset changes, and nutritional strategies.

We can help you be successful with Keto, or any other kind of diet. We can build routines and strategies for the weeks you’re traveling, and the weeks you’re home.

Save this guide

Use this Guide as a resource. Something you can fall back on for a quick reference when you find yourself in a food court with no way out and your rumbling stomach is leading the way.

Bookmark this page your in phone and pull it up whenever you’re in doubt.

Don’t let a drive-thru derail your fitness goals. Often times what you order can be just as, if not more important, than where you order.

If you are following a low-carb or Keto Diet for a weight loss goal, hitting up a fast food joint doesn’t mean you have to abandon it. Stick to the orders of this Guide. If you find yourself at a restaurant not covered here, fear not! Reference the tips at the beginning of this article and you’ll do just fine.

We’d love to hear from you:

Any other restaurants you want us to cover as part of our Guide?

Interested in other fast food guides, like for paleo?

Let us know in the comments!

PS: It should go without saying, that you probably shouldn’t live off fast food. But I get it, sometimes you have to do the best you can, with what you have, where you are. Just don’t consider this Guide as a pass to live life through a drive-thru window.

Immune system boosters

This post is sponsored by Nature’s Way.

With kids in school, we want to keep our family healthy during the winter season. I think of winter as the “eat more sugar, sleep less, experience more stress, and hide inside” season. These are some of the things that I try to remain mindful of as we head into the colder months.

As far as nutrients go, it can be challenging to eat a vegetable when you’re surrounded by holiday cookie platters. I look for ways to get in as much produce and nutrients as possible -soups and smoothies are convenient ways and the girls love them – and we consistently take our multivitamins and elderberry.

Some of the other things that I try to do to support our immune systems:

– Wash our hands… A LOT. I’m the weirdo who always has a hand sanitizer spray in her purse and in the car. I just have to say “hands” and the girls put their hands out to be sprayed (and roll their eyes a little. Don’t care).

DSC 3841

When we’re home, we use soap and water to wash our hands frequently, and we’re even more diligent during the winter.

DSC 3842

– Get outside. Vitamin D can help support the immune system, and we can naturally get less during the winter months. Even when it’s a little chilly, we bundle up and get outside every day. Whether we’re chasing each other, playing freeze dance, or taking the dogs for a walk, I think time outside is important for everyone’s sanity and happiness.

DSC 3884

– The wellness shot aka the lemon garlic shot.

The second any of us start to feel a cold coming on, the wellness shot happens. This is a friend from the San Diego barre studio’s recipe and I’ve been using it for years now. The whole family is on board, even the Pilot who stomps around muttering to himself after he takes one. P even gets a baby wellness shot and she chugs it like a champion. So proud.

DSC 3814

Here’s the recipe if you want to give it a try!

Juice of 1/2 lemon

1 clove of minced garlic

A little cayenne pepper on top

Take it like a shot! I’ll do these max twice a day when I start to feel a little under the weather

DSC 3819

– Try to get quality sleep. So much magic happens when we sleep, and it’s the body’s chance to repair, protect, and heal itself. Even with so much going on during this busy time of year, I try to make sleep a priority.

– Reishi! This is one of my all-time favorite supplements. Reishi is a beneficial mushroom, and I think it’s really helped keep my immune system healthy*.

DSC 3802

I also love that this Nature’s Way supplements doesn’t contain any artificial colors, wheat, soy, corn, gluten, dairy products, or preservatives. (As always, check with a doctor before adding any supplements to your routine.)

So, tell me friends: how do you support your immune system during the winter? Any favorite habits or remedies?

024: Jen from Peanut Butter Runner

Hi friends! I’m so excited for today’s episode because I interviewed my good friend Jen, and asked her many of the amazing questions you sent in via Instagram. It’s funny because I’ve followed her blog for years and years, and we’ve connected via email and DM so many times, but this was our first time actually chatting on the phone! She’s just as kind and wonderful as you’d expect from reading her blog.

Jen Eddins is pretty much a superhero. She’s a yoga instructor, group fitness instructor, personal trainer, running coach, author, single mom, and the blogger behind Peanut Butter Runner. It’s one of my personal favorite blogs to read, and if you haven’t made her sourdough bread yet, you need this in your life.

In this episode, we chat about:

– How to combine power yoga with strength training

– How she became an intuitive eater

– How she balances everything she does (teaching, working, taking care of a baby solo)

– The best breastfeeding food (it’s cake)

– and her Zero 2 Run program, which you can check out here

You can follow Jen on her blog, on Facebook, and on Instagram

1-dumbbell total body workout (with full video)

Hi friends! How are ya? Hope you’re having a wonderful morning. I’m hopping on some calls today, recording a podcast episode, and finishing up this week’s meal prep. I finally decided to get back on the meal prep train, and while it’s been super simple (sweet potatoes, roasted veggies, baked chicken, and this oatmeal bake), I think it’s going to make a huge difference.

For today’s post, how about a workout?

Have you even had those days where you can only find 1 dumbbell?

This is the story of my life. When Betsy visited, she got a kick out of the contents of my car’s trunk: two kettlebells, a handful of dumbbells, and two yoga mats. A girl’s gotta be prepared for workout photo sessions. I’m notorious for having dumbbells stashed in random places, and sometimes I can only find one of a certain weight. This is for those days, or when you want to switch things up by challenging your body unilaterally.

When we work both sides of the body at the same time, we’re relying on the stronger of the two limbs to carry us through the exercise. An easy way to make an exercise more challenging is to perform all reps on one side before switching to the opposite side.

This is a fun workout I put together with challenging compound movements that will strengthen your entire body and get your heart rate up in just 16 minutes.

My friend Katie provides low-impact modifications, and as always, honor your body and modify as needed. Talk with a doctor before making any fitness changes.

For more workouts, be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel!

Here’s what the workout looks like:

Hope you love it. 🙂

Have an amazing day and I’ll see ya in the morning!

Spa Day at Miraval Tucson

Hi friends! How are you? How was your Thanksgiving weekend? Did you shop the Black Friday sales? We braved World Market, Home Goods, and the BX, and other than that, I shopped online. I ordered some leggings and long-sleeved tops/sweaters from Gap, these furry J. Crew slippers, and today, I’m ordering all of our holiday gifts. Other than that adventure, I’ve been spending time with the girls (we did an arts and crafts festival, crepes, the park, the children’s museum, and baked cookies), watching Christmas movies on Netflix, decking our halls with all the holiday decor, and enjoying Sushi Sunday. (It’s a thing now.)

Miraval recap

For today’s post, I thought I’d share a recap from our day at Miraval last weekend! My friend Betsy came to visit as a birthday surprise, so we thought a spa day would be the perfect way to celebrate. We checked out Canyon Ranch and Miraval, but since I’ve stayed at Canyon Ranch a handful of times (and worked there for 2 years!), we figured we’d switch things up and try Miraval.

Miraval scenery

When we arrived on property, I instantly noticed the Zen vibe. Everything was incredibly clean and beautifully designed, and they had peaceful streams running throughout the massive desert landscape. We checked into the lobby, received our free tote bags and water bottles, and then grabbed a quick snack at the juice bar.

This snack bar is open all day and serves sandwiches, small bites, oatmeal (with lots of toppings!), coffee drinks, fresh juices, housemade bone broth (YES), and smoothies.

I grabbed a decaf coffee, green juice, and an oatmeal, topped with protein powder, lots of chia seeds, and a little maple syrup.
 Snackage

After our snack, we headed to our first class.

Our spa day serendipitously corresponded with dance week, so I was PUMPED to take some dance classes while we were there! (My friend Todd, who owns BreakOut studios, was one of the dance instructors and his classes set.my.soul.free.) I took a Bollywood class with Russel, which I LOVED, and then a Rock n’ Roll class with Todd. We danced to “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen, and it was amaaaaazing. While I was dancing my little heart out, Betsy took a lecture about stress management that she really enjoyed.

Then, it was time for lunch!

Miraval lunch

They had an incredibly healthy buffet-style spread set out, including soup, salad with so many toppings and protein options, roasted veggies, different types of sweet potatoes, healthier desserts, muffins, breads, pork posole (the special of the day), caprese, and pickled veggies. I piled my plate with salad, veggies, chicken, sweet potatoes, and pickled veggies, and got the asparagus onion soup (which was really, really good).

 Lunch buffet

After lunch, we took a circuit and strength training class,

and then headed to a session about taking better pictures with your smart phone. After that, it was my favorite part of the day: we got tea and chilled in a relaxation room in the spa. It has comfy couches, chairs, and blankets, and large windows, so you get an incredible view of the mountains. It felt so luxurious to just lie around for a little while. As someone who’s always moving or looking for something to do, especially during the day, this just felt like pure heaven.

Nap room

We took some quintessential robe pictures (ha),

shopped in the gift shop (I grabbed a shirt for the Pilot and a super cute Miraval beanie)

and hung out in the hot tub for a while. (I drank a mug of their bone broth with cayenne, salt, and lemon juice, and it was awesome.)

In the evening, Miraval has their bar set up with tacos and appetizers (including a full bar with cocktails and organic wines), so we grabbed a little snack and had our spa treatments. We both went for the grounding massage, which is purely head, feet, and hands. It was AMAZING. Also, the massage therapist kindly rubbed some arnica on my foot where I’d dropped my Hydroflask on it earlier in the week.

Meditation stones
While we were at Miraval, I realized how long a day truly is. I feel like so often the days FLY BY. We wake up, a thousand things happen, and then we go to bed. This was such a great reminder to truly take advantage of time and stop looking for excuses to always be busy. Since our trip, I’ve taken more time amidst the chores and to-dos to stop and just enjoy. I also realized how important it is for me to have relaxation or mental health checkpoints to look forward to. I looked forward to this spa day (and a weekend of hotel sleep!) for a couple of months. When things felt stressful and really crazy, I knew I’d get to sleep/relax at some point in the near future, and that gave me a little boost to get through it. I’d been feeling pretty drained on multiple fronts, and this put some pep in my step.

Miraval tucson review

Miraval is a magical place and I think I’ll be back sooner than later. I’m also so happy that I got to enjoy a weekend with my BFF Bets.

So, which is better: Miraval or Canyon Ranch?

They’re both incredible places to visit if you’re looking for a spa day or a getaway to focus on health and wellbeing. They’re similar but very different. The program offerings are different – I’d check out schedules at both to see what activities and spa treatments you’d prefer – and the vibe/accommodations are also very different.

Some of the major things I noticed:

–  Alcohol. Canyon Ranch does not serve alcohol, which is great if you’re looking to detox or you’re on a program to eliminate alcohol, but for those who’d like to partake, it can be a little bit of a bummer to not have a cocktail on vacation. When I worked at CR, guests would often just bring their own wine and drink it in their rooms. If we would have stayed the night, I definitely would have had a cocktail with dinner at Miraval; the bar menu looked fantastic.

– The vibe. The vibe at both properties is very different. Miraval feels very peaceful and healing, while Canyon Ranch has more of a gentle energy to it. At Miraval, I just wanted to lie in the nap room all day, and at CR, I always want to take as many classes as possible. I heard that Miraval has a strong focus on mental health, which was prevalent during our time there. Canyon Ranch has a full Life Enhancement Center focused on specific medical conditions and weight loss. Canyon Ranch also has a medical staff on hand. I did a quick google search and it doesn’t look like Miraval has a medical staff.

– The people. This was interesting, but I didn’t see a ton of people around who worked at Miraval. The lady who worked at the juice bar was wonderful, but I didn’t see a lot of staff around. This was kind of nice, because I didn’t feel like people were hovering over me, but I also got lost while I was walking to the gym and there was no one to ask. (I ended up asking another guest after wandering aimlessly for a little while and she showed me the way.) Also, I didn’t find the few people we did encounter to be overly friendly (or what you’d expect at a health resort). One of the girls who worked in the lobby acted annoyed that we couldn’t find the photography class (we were with a few other guests who also didn’t know where it was) and the instructor for said class was kind of rude to one of the guests who arrived late. It was just unexpected. At Canyon Ranch, you pretty much can’t walk 30 ft without seeing a staff member.

– The food! I really, really loved the appetizers, bar area, and the juice bar at Miraval. Sometimes at Canyon Ranch, I’d ask for extra food at lunch or breakfast to pack up and keep in my room for later. Sometimes you get hungry and there isn’t really anything open. It was really convenient that you could get a healthy snack, bone broth, juice or smoothie, whenever you wanted it. While I loved the healthy buffet at Miraval, I do like the option to order off more of a set menu at Canyon Ranch (or you could have a casual lunch at the cafe or more formal lunch at the dining room).

All in all, I feel like you can’t go wrong no matter what you choose. It was a great experience at Miraval and I’m excited to have this as an option for when I need a little bit of Zen in my life. I’ll probably make it back to Canyon Ranch eventually too, especially since I’ve heard they’ve made a lot of changes and added new classes since I’ve been there.

Thanksgiving Recap + my fave Black Friday finds

Hi friends! I hope you had an amazing Thanksgiving. Ours was spent surrounded by family and friends, enjoying the best food, and the typical shenanigans: breakfast at madre’s house, lunch/dinner at my uncle’s, and then back to madre’s for pie round part 2 and sales fliers.

W my loves

(I’m so thankful for these little turkeys every single day)

I made nana’s famous egg dish to take for breakfast (<— make this for Christmas or any brunches you have coming up!)

and brought this butternut squash creation to my uncle’s.

Butternut squash salad

I asked Kyle for some tips to spice up regular ol’ carmelized butternut squash, and he suggested adding pomegranate seeds, goat cheese, shaved brussels, and any kind of nuts. I found some pepitas in the pantry that were perfect, and drizzled an apple cider vinegar dressing on top (with maple syrup, a little Dijon, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper). It was so good!

The girls had the best time playing with all of their cousins, and Liv was stoked because her favorite lab, Ben, was there.

The cutest little Everly salad:

The guys all took off golfing and quite a few of us stayed back to play hide and seek with the kiddos and get first dibs on pie.

It was a full day, and I didn’t get a ton of pictures because my phone was tucked away for most of it. It felt good to unplug a little and truly enjoy the day.

This morning, the girls and I are ready to tackle my other favorite holiday: Black Friday! I compiled our gift ideas this week, so now it’s time to deal hop and cross things off this list. It’s definitely going to be another Amazon Christmas over here. 😉

Here are some of my favorite finds:

– My beloved PHLUR candles are HALF OFF! If you’ve been wanting to try one, this is the chance! They burn beautifully, don’t contain sketchy ingredients, and the fragrance is lovely

Spanx 20% off everything. I’m obsessed with these leggings and still occasionally wear this post-surgery staple when I wear a snug dress or a white top.

Your Hormone Balance is $150 off all test kits and consult packages. I recently had my hormones tested by Candace (she offered to do a test and consult after we chatted on the podcast) and the results were so insightful. I’m writing a whole post about it which should be live next week, but I’m so, so glad I did it. If you’ve been considering testing your hormones, this is a great opportunity.

J. Crew 40% off! Love this top, these leopard boots, this pink coat, these statement earrings, and this sweater.

Shopbop buy more, save more. These Rails plaid shirts are amazing.

– Amazon! I kind of get overwhelmed with Amazon because they have so many deals, but some of my favorite previous purchases are the Euphy, this cordless vacuum, this weighted blanket, and the Instant Pot! <— $59 right now

Madewell 25% off. The dress I’m wearing in the pic above is on sale here!

Gap. 50% off everything! I’m loading up on long-sleeved shirts, leggings, and pajamas for the girls.

Beautycounter is 15% off sitewide + free shipping over $50.
