How to Work Out in Small Spaces (The “No Space” Workout)

A picture of three figures trapped in a glass small space.

So it’s time to exercise, but you’re confined to a small space?

No problem!

In our Online Coaching Program, where I’m a senior coach, we help folks work out in whatever nook and cranny they may have available. Today, we’ll share these tips with you too.

And no, we won’t make you shrink like Ant-Man to do your workout.

This gif shows Ant-Man shrinking, who can probably work out in any small space.

Here’s what we’ll cover today:

Let’s jump right in!

How Much Space Do You Need to Work Out?

A picture of the Enterprise, which I imagine is full of small spaces.

“Baby, air and light and time and space
have nothing to do with it
and don’t create anything
except maybe a longer life to find
new excuses
for.”

– Charles Bukowski

“Space, the final frontier”

– James Tiberius Kirk

When it comes to working out in a small space, the first obstacle you have to overcome is your mindset:

You may find yourself thinking, “I can’t work out in this space.”

We want to flip this to “I get to be more creative in this space.”

This may seem like a minor change of perspective, but oftentimes the most important part of overcoming a challenge is adjusting our mindset. I see this over and over again with our coaching clients

Step 1 for our Small Space Workout is becoming okay with whatever room we may have to exercise.

Step 2 is determining WHERE our actual Small Space Workout will take place.

That might lead you to a question:

How much space do you need to exercise and work out?

Answer: not much.

I grew up working out in a room not much bigger than a closet:

A pic of Jim's small space workout room, which he used growing up.

Which now acts as a storeroom.

If you have enough room to do a plank, you’re good:

A gif of Coach Jim doing a plank in a small space.

However, even if you can’t spread out for a plank, that’s okay. We can always use the small space itself for “equipment,” like with wall push-ups:

Coach Jim doing wall push-ups in a small space.

Speaking of, I can already anticipate your next question:

What’s the minimum equipment needed for a work out?

As we cover in the Ultimate Guide to Working Out from Home, we can think of three tiers of no-equipment workouts:

  • The floor
  • The floor and a wall
  • The floor, a wall, and a towel

Ford saying "if you want to survive out here you gotta know where your towel is."

The trick here is using our own body’s weight as equipment, which is known as “bodyweight training.”

However, today we’ll also cover a few items you may want to buy, in case you want to build a small home gym.

But first, let’s talk about getting by with the bare minimum.

Small Space Workout Level 1: Get Moving

A picture of a mouse working out in a small space.

For the first level of our Small Space Workout, we want to keep it simple.

We’re going to focus on three different areas:

  • The lower body
  • The “push” muscles
  • The “pull” muscles

That’s it.

To train our lower body in a small space, we’ll focus on squats and lunges.

If you’re just starting out, you can do assisted squats against a wall or chair:

A gif of Coach Jim doing an assisted squat in a small space.

We’ll follow the same idea for our lunges:

A gif of Coach Jim doing an assisted lunge in a small space.

Once these become no thang, we’ll level up to regular squats:

A gif of Coach Jim doing squats in a small space.

Or regular lunges:

A gif of Coach Jim doing a lunge in a small space.

For our “push” muscles, you guessed it, it’s all about push-up variations.

We can start will simple push-ups against a wall:

A gif of Coach Jim doing wall push-ups in a small space.

To knee push-ups:

A gif of Coach Jim doing knee push-ups in a small space.

To regular push-ups:

A gif of Coach Jim doing push-ups in a small space.

If you want to make these even more challenging, you can use the wall to brace your feet to do elevated push-ups.

A sturdy stool or chair could also be handy here:

Elevated push-ups like this are a great way to bodyweight train.

For our “pull” muscles, this becomes a little tricker in a small space with no equipment.

But we can get by with two things:

  • A towel
  • A doorway

We’ll use both of these to perform bodyweight rows.

To use a towel for rows:

  • Fold your towel twice over, hotdog style.
  • Step on the towel with your front foot.
  • Grab each end of the towel and pull yourself downwards.
  • After your back gets parallel-ish to ground, lift yourself back up – that’s one rep.

It’ll look something like this:

Coach Jim doing a towel row in a small space.

The other option for our pull muscles, is to do rows from a doorway.

To perform a doorway row:

  • Stand in front of your doorway and grab both sides.
  • Place your feet a little closer to the doorway, so you’re leaning back.
  • Sit back so you put weight on your arms.
  • Pull yourself forward.

You’ll end up looking like so:

Coach Jim showing you the doorway bodyweight row

If you want to next level it, you can use your towel AND doorway for your rows too:

A towel can help you do a bodyweight row, as shown here.

The towel might help you lean back even further, creating a more challenging exercise.

I walk you through how to use a towel for various pull exercises right here:

If either of these starts to feel easy, try doing them with only one hand, like so:

Here’s what to do for your Level 1 Small Space Workout:

  • Pick a lower body, a push, and pull exercise.
  • Run through a circuit, doing about 10 reps of each.
  • Repeat until you get tired.

That’s it. Don’t overthink your workout. Just get moving.

When this starts to feel easy, move on to Level 2.

Small Space Workout Level 2: Bring the Intensity

This picture shows a man with a couple weights, working out in a small space.

Once you get comfortable doing our lower-body, push, and pull exercises, there are a few things we can do to up the intensity.

For example, did you know you can do deadlifts with nothing but a towel?

Towels really can be used for a home workout

The trick is to get your setup right, by pushing your hips back and chest out. Then you perform the same upward motion as you would in a normal deadlift.

I walk you through how to do a towel deadlift right here:

I apologize if you rip your towel in half doing this because you’re so strong (but like, worth it).

The other cool thing you can do with towels? Chin-ups!

If you have a sturdy door and a couple of towels, you can use them as a chin-up alternative

Naturally, I have a video on doing towel chin-ups right here:

But you don’t need towels to do a Level 2 Small Space Workout.

Here are two ways to level up your “no-space” training:

#1) Think One-Sided

We’re going to do some unilateral training by working one limb at a time.

Squats no problem? How about a one-legged squat?

A gif of Coach Jim doing one-legged squats in a small space.

We can do the same thing with our push muscles, by doing one-arm push-ups:

A gif of Coach Jim doing one arm push-ups in a small space.

#2) Change the Tempo

We have a couple of options here.

A) Slow down

By slowing down your cadence, you’re going to increase the time under tension of your muscles. That equals a tougher workout, which equals a win.

Have you ever taken a full 60 seconds to do a push-up? It’s gnarly:

B) Hold the movement.

The other option would be to hold your position at the top or bottom of an exercise.

For example, holding a chin-up at the top position:

Or holding a squat at the bottom position:

If you add a 10-second pause during each rep, you’re going to wear yourself out MUCH quicker, small space or no small space.

Small Space Workout Level 3: May the Force Be With You

A picture of a crowd of Stormtroopers, who could probably use some extra space.

Do you have access to a hallway that you can commandeer for a bit?

Then you can do our Star Wars Workout!

It’s designed to be done in a small space, like a hallway, or an escape pod.

At this level, if you were going to buy some equipment for a small home gym, my number one recommendation would be to purchase some resistance or exercise bands:

Staci showing you the "pull apart" with a resistance band

They don’t take up much space and can offer you a lot of versatility for Small Space Workouts.

For example, you can do deadlifts using a resistance band:

You really can deadlift with all sorts of objects and resistance band deadlifts are a great exercise.

Or presses:

This is a great way to train your "push" muscles with a resistance band.

Or rows:

Make sure your anchor is sturdy here.

Boom!

There are your lower-body, push, and pull exercises we talked about earlier. Plus, we’re barely scratching the surface of all the exercises you can do with a sturdy exercise band.

If you want some more ideas on how to train with bands, or which ones you should buy, check out our Ultimate Guide to Training With Resistance Bands

Lessons from Tony Stark for “No Space” Workouts

A picture of Iron Man holding up his hand.

We’d all love a tremendous amount of space to work out.

However, we work with whatever we have, whenever we can, wherever we are.

So remember, if Tony Stark can build a robot in a cave with a pile of scraps, then we can scrape together a workout with next to nothing as well.

Or build our own suits out of cardboard.

A pic of Coach Jim as Iron Man, which is just too fun not to include.

Which I’ve done.

Just remember, you got this.

Disney and San Diego recap

Sharing some adventures from our trip to San Diego, some of our favorite SD restaurants and family-friendly activities, and a trip to Disneyland with Dance the Magic!

Hi hi! Happy Wednesday! What’s going on today? I’m headed to the girls’ school this morning, catching an F45 class, and putting the finishing touches on podcast episode #100!! It will go live next week and yesss there’s a giveaway.

For today’s post, I wanted to share a recap of our trip to San Diego and Disneyland! Our last trip to Disneyland was fall 2019, so we were thrilled to be headed back. (We’ve been to Disney World a couple of times since it’s reopened, but it was our first trip back to Disneyland.)

Here’s a little recap of our trip, plus some of our fave spots.

Disney and San Diego recap

When we found out that Liv’s dance team was going to be performing in the Disneyland parade with Dance the Magic, we knew we were IN. We also figured we could sandwich a San Diego trip along with it, since it’s an easy flight to San Diego (an hour from Tucson) and rent a car to drive to Anaheim. We were so happy to be back in SD!!

We went straight to Tiki Port, who welcomed us with possibly the BEST acai bowl I’ve had in my life. (And I’ve had many, many from Tiki Port.) The guy making them was truly an artist; I had chocolate chips, acai, granola, fruit, AND peanut butter in every single bite.

Friday Faves 4.1

(This is the Drifter with peanut butter. If you go to San Diego, get it! You won’t regret it.)

We also made a stop at the beach so the girls could wet their feet (aka their clothes and entire bodies), to the hotel to change, Belmont Park (where they rode ride after ride) and OB Noodle House for dinner.

The next morning’s breakfast was at Great Maple, which is one of our favorite breakfast restaurants.

This avocado stack had arugula, avocado, balsamic reduction, and perfectly-cooked salmon.

We also shared maple bacon donuts with our entrees.

After breakfast, we played at the waterfront park for a while and then headed to the New Children’s Museum, where the kids had a blast checking out all of the exhibits. It changes every time we visit, and it’s truly a kids’ dream come true. We got Tender Greens to-go for lunch, and hit the road the Anaheim!

Our first stop in Anaheim was the hotel to drop off our luggage and then straight to character dining at Goofy’s Kitchen!

While we’re at Disney, I always try to book one “real” (sit-down) meal each day. It’s typically lunch, because everyone gets the chance to sit down and refuel. We got very lucky with reservations this trip and I was able to book Goofy’s Kitchen, Tortilla Jo’s (Downtown Disney) and Blue Bayou (Pirates of the Caribbean) while we were there!

(Lunch at Blue Bayou. Salmon, rice, veggies, and we shared a chocolate cake for dessert)

Goofy’s Kitchen is a buffet with everything you could ever want, a ridiculous dessert selection, cocktails, and the characters come to each table dancing to music while you twirl your napkin above your head. It’s everything.

The rest of the weekend was spent riding rides,

(P rode the Incredicoaster 3 times… our daredevil child, lord help us)

eating ALL of the Disney treats

(my faves are the M&M rice crispy and the chocolate peanut butter sandwich, which is like a giant amped up Reese’s)

and watching Liv and her team perform in the parade!! It was the first Dance the Magic performance since they’ve reopened and I had full-body chills the entire time. It was SO amazing, so magical, and all of the studios did such an incredible job. The streets were completely lined with spectators and everyone was clapping and cheering. I heard there were about 600 total dancers and they marched down the parade route, dancing to “Zero to Hero” from Hercules.

Lining up to head into the park before the parade:

I’ll never forget it.

As part of Dance the Magic, we were also able to attend a VIP breakfast in California Adventure, which started at 5:30 Sunday morning. Ya’ll know me and how much I LOVE my sleep, but I rallied and made it happen. It was really cool to ride some rides before the park was open and to watch Liv run around with all of her dance friends who have become like family.

Some Disney questions I figured I could chat about in this post (and things I was wondering about myself before our trip):

Was it crowded?

After reading some things on Instagram and other blog posts, I expected it to be PACKED, especially since it was a weekend trip over high season. As someone who is used to walking shoulder-to-shoulder with complete strangers down Main Street, I thought it was lovely. It felt very very open and not too crowded at all. They’re still using a reservation system to limit capacity, so you have to book reservations for each day you’ll be in the parks. (You need a ticket before you can book reservations but can explore the calendar online to see what availability looks like.)

What were the character interactions like?

The characters were still separated from park guests using some type of barrier, and you could walk in front, take a picture, and talk with them. Apparently this is changing at the end of the month, and character hugs will be back! P LOVES hugging the characters, so this makes my heart happy.

What are the current mask rules?

Masks were not required outdoors and recommended indoors. Most guests were not wearing them.

What is the new Genie+ system? Are there Fast Passes?

Disney has done away with Fast Passes. Previously, you could book up to two rides at a time, and once you finished those, you could book new ones throughout the day using the app. In the past, it was also free. Fast Passes are gone, and they’ve introduced two new paid options: Genie + ($20 per person per day) and Lightning Lane for premium attractions (which you can only use with the paid Genie+ and it’s an extra $12-20 per ride, per person).

With Genie+ you have the ability to book time slots for some of the more popular rides (like Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Indiana Jones, Incredicoaster, etc). It’s $20 per person per day and we found that it was DEFINITELY worth it. We didn’t buy it the first day since Liv was doing parade practice for most of the day, and the lines were very long. I was chatting with a cast member and they told me that they have to push through the Lightning Lane people first because they paid for a spot. So this means that if the Lightning Lane line is long, and you’re in the Stand-by line, they won’t let you move until the Lightning Lane is shorter.

The second day, we did Genie+ and it was absolutely worth it. We hardly waited for longer than 5 minutes for each ride, and ended up doing about 19 rides that day. You can’t book Lightning Lane passes for some of the newer or premium attractions without paying an additional fee (like Star Wars Rise of the Resistance, Radiator Springs, Web Slingers, etc) and this is where I have mixed feelings.

Let’s say you want to do Web Slingers, Radiator Springs, and Rise of the Resistance in one day. You have to have Genie+ to even have the ability to book these rides ($80 for a family of 4) and you book Lightening Lane with the paid fee for each of these ($48 for Web Slingers + $48 for Radiator Springs + $80 for Rise of the Resistance). This comes out to an extra $256 for a family of 4, just to ride these 3 rides, in addition to your park tickets. It just feels like a huge money grab to me.

I will say that Genie+ is absolutely worth it if you want to ride a lot of rides, and to be strategic on the premium attractions. We ended up paying $80 to do Rise of the Resistance and it was probably the coolest ride I’ve ever experienced (and I know nothing about Star Wars lol).

This trip genuinely felt like a vacation and it was such a blast to get away and enjoy the weekend. Spending time with our family is my favorite thing ever, and I’m looking forward to more adventures this summer. 🙂

So, tell me friends: any vacations on the radar for this spring/summer? What’s your favorite place to visit with kids?? Also, fave Disney treat?!

What I’ve read lately

Sharing my recent reads and if I’d recommend them!

Hey hey! How’s the day going?? We’re back in Tucson and back in the swing of life around here. We had the BEST time and it felt so good to enjoy some Disney time, and be back in San Diego! (We drive by our San Diego house every time we’re in town and it definitely makes us nostalgic.)

For today’s post, I’m sharing a book recap of what I’ve read lately and what’s next on my list. I’ve read some amazing books over the past couple of months, and I’m pumped to share them with you.

The Paris Apartment: this book BLEW ME AWAY. I usually avoid thriller-type books because I don’t want to read anything violent before bed, but I’ve found that I really like a bit of mystery and suspense. This was not violent or super scary, and I blasted through it within a few days. I already gave it to a friend and was like YOU HAVE TO READ THIS. If you’re looking for a quick and intense read, this is it. 9/10

From Amazon:

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has. Ben’s neighbors are an eclectic bunch, and not particularly friendly. Jess may have come to Paris to escape her past, but it’s starting to look like it’s Ben’s future that’s in question.
The socialite – The nice guy – The alcoholic – The girl on the verge – The concierge

Everyone’s a neighbor. Everyone’s a suspect. And everyone knows something they’re not telling.

The Fountains of Silence:  this book is so well-crafted, and explores the lasting effects of Spain’s Civil War, its multi-decade dictatorship, and the harrowing effects on its people. The hardships they faced, contrasted with the glittering ambition of an aspiring matador, a forbidden love story, and a young girl tending to orphans (with mysterious origins), made this a heartwarming, fascinating, heartbreaking read. If you like historical fiction, definitely check this out. 10/10

From Amazon:

Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming promise of sunshine and wine. Among them is 18-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of an oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother’s birth through the lens of his camera. Photography – and fate – introduce him to Ana, whose family’s interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War – as well as chilling definitions of fortune and fear. Daniel’s photographs leave him with uncomfortable questions amidst shadows of danger. He is backed into a corner of difficult decisions to protect those he loves. Lives and hearts collide, revealing an incredibly dark side to the sunny Spanish city.

Master storyteller Ruta Sepetys once again shines light into one of history’s darkest corners in this epic, heart-wrenching novel about identity, unforgettable love, repercussions of war, and the hidden violence of silence – inspired by the true postwar struggles of Spain. Includes vintage media reports, oral history commentary, photos, and more.

The Rain Barrel Effect: I was so excited to read this one, especially because it complements the lessons I’m doing in the Integrative Health Practitioner certification. While Dr. Cabral provides a lot of scientific-based information, he does a great job making it easily-digestible and enjoyable to read.

From Amazon:

Discover the 6,000 year old secret to finally getting well, losing weight and feeling alive again! Every year we spend more and more on healthcare, research and pharmaceuticals, yet every year the rate of auto-immune, Alzheimer’s, digestive disorders, diabetes and diseases of all types continue to rise. Soon 1 out of 2 people will get cancer in their life time and 2 out 3 people will be overweight. Clearly what we’re doing is not working and there must be something that’s being overlooked… It turns out the answer is simpler than we think and it lies in the oldest form of medicine in the world. The Rain Barrel Effect explains exactly how we get sick, put on weight, and begin to breakdown over time, as well as how to reverse that process and take back control of your life!

The 4-Hour Workweek  – DNF (= Did Not Finish): I had high hopes for this one, but was a bit daunted (and it made me chuckle) to see that a book titled The 4-hour Workweek takes about 14 hours to listen to on audio. I was like, “Ok, I’m going to take almost 4 supposed work weeks to get through this thing.” While I like the premise of the book, I found some of the concepts to be unrealistic for the average person. Like I would LOVE to just go to Tahiti for three months and work, but there’s that whole kids, pets, and responsibilities thing. I would adore to go to Argentina and learn how to tango from the experts. But, life.

At the same time, I’m taking some of his ideas and using them to implement more “pockets of retirement” into our lives. I don’t want to wait until we’re “retired” to truly start traveling and relaxing – we can do some of those things right now. He also had a great point in saying that many of us won’t actually stop working at retirement; we’ll work on something else, like a passion project, or volunteer in some capacity. Enjoy life now. I can definitely get on board with that. 🙂 I might pick this up and start listening again, but I feel like I got what I needed from it. 7/10

From Amazon:

Forget the old concepts of retirement and a deferred life plan. There is no need to wait and every reason not to, especially in unpredictable economic times. For living more and working less, this book is the blueprint.

This expanded edition includes dozens of practical tips and case studies from people who have doubled their income, overcome common sticking points, and reinvented themselves using the original book. Also included are templates for eliminating email and negotiating with bosses and clients, how to apply lifestyle principles in unpredictable economic times, and the latest tools, tricks, and shortcuts for living like a diplomat or millionaire without being either.

Next on my list:

Deep Nutrition: this book explains why your genes need traditional food and how our diets affect us on a cellular level. I’m so excited to read this one!

If you’re looking for new book inspiration, I’m still loving Book of the Month. If you use my referral link, you can try it out for $5!

So, friends: what are you reading right now? Any thriller-ish type books you’ve loved lately?
