Prime Early Access sale – my top picks!

Sharing the best of the best for the Prime Early Access sale! This is when you can get Black Friday-ish deals before the holidays and so many of my faves are discounted right now. *Affiliate links are included below that allow me to earn a small commission I use to keep this lil blog running. Thank you so much to those of you who shop my links – I appreciate it so much.

Hi friends! How are ya? I hope you’re having a wonderful morning so far. I’m headed to a juice date with a friend and running some last-minute errands before the crew is out of school for fall break! I CAN’T WAIT.

Today, I’m excited to share all of the good stuff from the Prime Early Access sale. This is when you can get Black Friday type deals early, before the holidays.

When I found out this sale event was on the way, I was pumped for two reasons:

1) I can order holiday gifts NOW. I feel like the holidays keep going by way too quickly, and it’s become my goal to have everything done and wrapped by the week after Thanksgiving. Aint got no time to be stressed about gifts when there are so many fun events to enjoy.

2) This is my chance to get things around the house we’ve been needing at a sweet discount. We desperately need a new vacuum, and if you’re in the market for electronics or home goods, this is the perfect chance to get it.

Big sales like this tend to be overwhelming, so I sorted through the spreadsheets of goods way in advance to find the best stuff for you!

Here are my top faves from the Prime Early Access sale, which runs through tomorrow.

Prime Early Access sale – my top picks!

My faves:

The makeup eraser. I’m obsessed with this thing, and it really does remove so much makeup! I love them so much, I travel with the mini versions.

The best milk frother. It’s so inexpensive and really makes a difference in your morning coffee.

This toiletry travel bag.

My favorite water bottle! I’ve used so many types and always come back to this one. It’s the water bottle the kids use and love, too.

This scalp massager for applying shampoo.

Love these fuzzy slippers!

This brow gel is a gold star.

This super cute lounge set.

Such a great deal on these claw clips.

The best detangling brush.

This is the waterpik I use every day!

For her:

A kindle paper white. I’ve been wanting one for myself, especially since I get distracted when I read on my phone or the iPad. It will be so nice to have something solely for books.

These lightweight joggers and perfect for hiking and life.

Amazing quality (49k + reviews) leggings and lots of colors.

This mock neck rib sweater would be so cute with a blazer and jeans.

This smocked mini dress. I might order this in cream now to wear with a jean jacket, and save for the spring/summer.

This leather belt bag looks so much more expensive than it is.

The super popular lip mask.

Gel polish set for at-home manis.

LOVE the shape of this tote bag (and under $30!)

A soft and cozy cropped fleece.

These pointed toe ankle boots.

A cropped athletic tank for yoga, barre or spin.

This plaid blazer! I’d pair it with a lacy cami and jeans or with a black mock neck mini dress and Chelsea boots.

Ordering a black and white bodysuit; the neckline is so flattering and these look great with jeans and sweaters.

Vitamin E oil. I use this on my face, and have used it for scars and healing in the past.

For him:

New athletic sneakers! These are ideal for cross training and weightlifting.

Lightweight athletic polo. (This is a good dad or uncle gift!)

AMAZING deal on these boxer briefs.

A crewneck sweater in a neutral color.

Our favorite noise canceling headphones. The Pilot and I each have a pair and I love them for air travel and work.

A wet/dry electric shaver.

A new watch.

Comfy fleece joggers.

For the kids:

Fire tablet – this is so good for travel!

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls.

Number blocks.

A raptor dart blaster.

A Hape wood bike for toddlers. We bought Hape products when Liv was a baby and they were the highest quality baby toys; many of them lasted for P to use them too.

Pop Up Pirate game.

A Bluey board game.

A wooden activity cube. Another high-quality baby toy that will last.

Amazing price on these Calico Critters toys.

Marvel action figures (getting these for P for her birthday!).

Dr. Seuss cookbook for kid chefs.

A microscope for kids.

A science kit with over 15 easy experiments.

Picasso tiles.

For home:

A remote control oil diffuser! I’m going to get 2 or 3 of these since I’ve been focusing more on essential oils instead of candles.

A cordless lightweight stick vacuum.

A neutral rug for the living room.

A portable carpet and upholstery cleaner. I’m scarily excited about this thing lol.

An air fryer! If you’ve been fighting getting one of these – I did it, too – I highly recommend it. It’s the best for anything frozen or potato-related, and we use it multiple times a week.

An air purifier.

A humidifier. We use these during the winter months, especially for the kids.

The best stand mixer.

Stasher bags! I use these for travel and for kids’ snacks and lunches. They’re well-made and I’m glad we’re able to use less disposable practice with these.

I definitely want to check out this cookbook.

This is the blender we have and use almost every day. We use it for smoothies, soups, salsa, hummus, and dips.

Are you shopping the Prime Early Access sale? What’s on your radar?

I’ll update this post tomorrow morning with anything good I find at the last minute, too.

xoxo

random thoughts for a Monday morning

Hi hi friends! How are you? How was the weekend? Ours was a good one. The weather was a dream – it felt like San Diego, plus it rained every day – and P had a soccer game. We smoked chicken for dinner, met up with friends, caught up on chores, and enjoyed relaxing as a fam. We sat on the back of the Pilot’s SUV and watched the girls run around in the rain for almost an hour.

Today’s post is a little all over the place. I didn’t take a ton of pics, but I have some random thoughts to share with ya and would love to hear what’s going on in your world, too.

Random thoughts for a Monday morning:

– We replanted for fall, and I’m so pumped for some new veggies in the garden. Usually I plant too much and certain plants crowd others, so I only did carrots, beets, and broccoli in the raised bed. In our flat garden bed, we have swiss chard, romaine, arugula, and butternut squash. I have no clue what I’m doing with the butternut squash, but I’ve found that it’s best to just plant whatever you want to learn how to plant, and you figure it out as you go.

(See those poor smashed onions in the bottom left corner? You just figure these things out along the way.)

– This thought crossed my mind during my last hot yoga class, and I was thinking about how much I enjoy hot power yoga. It feels like a hug from a workout, and while it’s still taxing and challenging, it’s simultaneously restorative and a huge treat. It made me remember the Bikram yoga days of yore, which were a start contrast in the yoga world.

I got scolded frequently.

The first time was for drinking water before Eagle pose (don’t you dare), and for little things, like not transitioning fast enough to the savasana portions, keeping my eyes on myself (I had to look around to figure out what I was doing!), laughing during the intense breathing section (once, a friend and I got the church giggles during class) and who knows what else. The incredibly steamy and sweaty rooms were always carpeted (disgusting), smelled like hamsters, and I loved it????? I loved it! SO weird haha.

Needless to say, I’m glad the Bikram phenomenon has come and gone, for various reasons.

– We tried a new-to-us restaurant in Tucson: the Parish. We’ve heard so many great things over the years but have never made it out there. We met up with friends for a lil double date, and it was SO good. They have twists on Southern food, so we shared popcorn, hushpuppies, and the best brussels sprouts for apps, and the entrees were things like fried chicken sandwich, gumbo, I had an extremely flavorful salmon salad, and meatloaf. The drinks were also an A+. We’ll definitely go back! Check it out if you’re a Tucson local looking for something to try out.

(Also three cheers for madre and nana taking the crew to the movies while we enjoyed a night out! They saw Lyle Lyle Crocodile and raved about it. I want to see it now, too!)

– Figured out the secret to paying attention to audiobooks: I listen to them at 1.1 or 1.2 speed. I love the idea of audiobooks, especially when I’m doing chores or taking a walk, but will often get distracted. Speeding it up makes all the difference! When I listen to them at regular speed now, they sound like they’re in slow motion. If you have any audiobook recs, please send them my way! Currently sucked into 11//22/63 and have about 27 hours left. 😉

– I tried cryotherapy for the first time at Icebox Tucson. They also have multiple types of skincare and facials, red light therapy, localized cryotherapy, and compression. I was very nervous for my first experience – let’s be real, I hate being cold – but have really been wanting to try it.

They gave me a cozy robe to wear into the ice chamber, along with socks, a headband to cover my ears, gloves, and a mask to keep my face warm. When you get inside, they play a song of your choice on the noise canceling headphones, and you remove the robe for the session. It was three minutes long and I was FREEZING. Frozen. My body was like WTF is happening to me.

I didn’t know what to do with my body, so instead of shivering, I flapped my arms like a bird, which seemed to help. Thanks to the music, the three minutes went by fairly quickly, and I felt great afterwards. I immediately felt a surge of energy which stayed with me throughout the day.

After the cryotherapy, I tried out the compression booties, which felt amazing. I can absolutely see myself adding this into my routine when I want a little energy boost, or when I’ve had a particularly hard workout. Hiking season is officially back, so I’m looking forward to some long hikes coming up, in addition to the usual teaching, yoga, Peloton, and strength training rotation.

– Speaking of energy, I’m really looking forward to the 7-day Dr. Cabral detox starting one week from today. So many of you have joined in and I can’t wait to do this as a community. If you’re interested in learning more, you can sign up here with the code FITNESSISTA20 for 20% off. You can check out the IG live I did last week with Dr. Cabral answering the top questions we’ve received, too.

If you know you’re in, I would definitely order by tomorrow to ensure you have everything you need!

So tell me friends:

anyone else with intense Bikram stories to share, or any other fitness misadventures?

Have you tried cryotherapy??

Hope you have a lovely morning and I’ll see ya soon.

Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today!

112: Tips for anxious flyers (from a Pilot)

Sharing tips for my friends who are scared of flying, nervous, and anxious about air travel.. just like yours truly. I reached out to the Pilot to write a guest post, and am also sharing some of the tips I’ve picked up!

*Update: 10/6/22: Thank you so much for your overwhelming feedback on this post! So many of you have shared it with friends, too. I asked the Pilot if he’d help me turn it into a podcast episode and we recorded this episode with his tips and advice. It can be reassuring to hear a pilot’s voice telling you it will be ok, especially if you’re currently on an airplane or about to travel. 🙂

You can check out the full episode here:

Tips for anxious flyers (from a Pilot)

Friends out there know I hate to fly. They also find it ironic and hilarious that my husband is a pilot who loves to fly. All of these years later, he still gets disappointed when a flight is canceled. He still recaps his best flights to me (even when I zone out at the acronyms and hand signals #adhd). When we fly together, I feel so much less stressed. I know he could handle things if something went awry, and I can nudge him when I hear a sound and he tells me what it is. However, when I fly alone, I spend pretty much the entire time clutching the armrest, sweating profusely, and saying Hail, Mary over and over in my brain. (Unless there’s zero turbulence and I can read a book.)

On my last flight with the girls to Hawaii – it was just me solo- I was feeling particularly scared about flying over the ocean. The worst part is that I have to play it cool for them because I don’t want them to be nervous, too. The kids are traveling professionals; they watch a movie or play the Nintendo Switch and eat lots of snacks while we fly.

A couple of things helped me on this flight:

– Before boarding, I checked out the radar to see how many planes were in the air at that moment. It made me realize that my flight was so insignificant to the thousands that take off and land each day.

– Got this tip from the fear of flying Reddit page: pretend like you’re on a bus traveling safely from point A to point B. This helped so much!!

– I made sure I had lots of things to keep me distracted. I read an entire book on the way to Hawaii and it kept me engaged so I didn’t have time to think about the fact that I was in a metal box in the sky.

– Good ol’ CBD. I have it with me, and even if I don’t need to take it, it’s comforting to have on hand. (This is the one I use. Full transparency, I used to partner with them and am still an affiliate. My code FITNESSISTA still works for a discount!)

I asked the Pilot if he would help me with a guest post about tips for my fellow nervous flyers, and here’s what he wrote!

My real-life Top Gun 😉

Tips for anxious flyers (from a Pilot)

Tips for anxious flyers (from a Pilot)

Good morning, friends. The Fitnessista has her hands full this morning, so the Pilot’s here with some tidbits to help anxious flyers. Let me begin by saying that these aren’t tips on how to be more zen during air travel. Suggestions for the best soothing music to listen to and which decaf herbal tea will best calm your nerves is a bit out of my lane. However, I’m happy to share a little peek behind the curtain of what’s happening during your flight to make you feel a little more at ease. If you’ve got nerves of steel and turbulence doesn’t bother you, then at least you can share this with your terrified seatmate who is white-knuckling the armrest on the wild ride that is the final approach into Vegas in the summer.

Emergency preparedness and simulations

I’ve flown small, maneuverable aircraft for the military and large, heavily-automated aircraft for a major airline. I’ve seen a lot over the past 19 years of professional aviation, and while there have been times when something unusual occurred that I hadn’t previously experienced, nothing surprised me. That’s because the training is just that good. Simulator events that train us to execute emergency procedures, on both the mil and legacy airline side, are nothing but a series of calamities, one after another, often compounded upon each other.

The conditions such as weather and performance factors are often worst case scenarios. However, the expectation for the behavioral response in managing these disasters is calm and methodical. Pilots are faced with a countless variety of emergency situations until working the problem(s) becomes second nature. By the time I lost an engine in combat in 2009, it almost felt too easy because nothing else was going wrong. Fortunately, most of the time, we’re up there just monitoring the ride, sipping coffee, and planning the next phase of the flight (while enjoying the view, of course).

The real deal with turbulence and weird noises

So that’s the human factors side. Let’s talk about the aircraft themselves. What’s up with all those noises and bumps along the way? First of all, turbulence, those bumps you feel, are fine. They’re not going to hurt the plane. Pilots are constantly talking to air traffic control about what kind of “ride” the flight in front of it is having, and if another altitude is better, but that’s typically just for passenger comfort. The aircraft itself can take quite a beating. It’ll fly just fine through heavy rain/snow. It can be struck by lightning. It can fly on one engine to a suitable airport for a safe landing. She’s an engineering masterpiece.

So, let’s talk about the weird noises. Chances are, if you’re an anxious flyer, you’re hyper aware and pick up on everything little sound. I’m here to tell you, it’s okay. Engine spool up and deceleration are normal for all flight regimes, including immediately after takeoff. When you hear a sound like the wind is getting slightly louder and the airplane shakes a little bit, that’s just the speed brakes coming out.

Speed brakes are generally used to meet speed restrictions on approach when the flight computer didn’t quite perfectly calculate the descent point or when you need to slow down to put the flaps and gear out. I’ve used them on virtually every flight. Obviously, the landing gear coming down can be fairly loud. The loud clunk you hear afterwards is the gear doors closing. All the other weird sounds are likely just flight control surfaces like flaps, slats, and trim. No biggie.

Go-arounds

There are some things outside of a normal flight that can seem concerning on the surface, so let’s talk about those. Go-arounds. When the airplane appears to be ready to land, but at the last minute, the engines power up, and you’re pushed back in your seat as the aircraft begins to climb away. Yikes – that’s got to be bad right? Nope. Someone just made a very smart decision.

A go-around can occur for a myriad of reasons:  previous landing aircraft too slow to clear the runway (or ATC didn’t provide proper spacing), the crosswinds exceeded their limitation, the aircraft wasn’t properly setup to land by a certain point, the pilots didn’t see required visual references to land due to weather, etc. The point is, someone checked their ego and made the difficult (but correct) decision to go around and that’s the kind of judgement you want on the flight deck.

It’s better to do that 5 times in a row than push a landing that doesn’t need to happen there. Pilots plan the fuel so that after a certain point, if they couldn’t land, they have enough fuel to get to their alternate destination which will have better conditions for landing. This may require the pilots to hold or orbit in one place for weather to clear and coordination to be completed, so don’t let that “idle” time worry you either.

Anyway, that’s the short list for now. I hope it gave you some reassurance about what’s happening the next time you fly. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments or message Gina, and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Until next time.

– The Pilot

7-day Dr. Cabral EquiLife Detox (details here!)

Sharing the details about the upcoming Dr. Cabral EquiLife 7-day detox I’ll be doing along with my community. If you’d like to join in, check out the details below! You can also click here and use FITNESSISTA20 for 20% off.

Hey hey! Happy Wednesday! I hope you’re enjoying the week so far. The Pilot is off work today (wahoo!) so I’m looking forward to F45 and brunch together, and also recording a podcast episode for this blog post.

I’m about to head into another round of the EquiLife 7-day detox, and I’d love to invite you to join in on the fun. October is the perfect time for a lil kickstart and reset.

When you hear the word “detox,” you might immediately be turned off and rightly so.

A lot of detoxes are…well, terrible.

They’re not designed with a purpose, and the main goal is to drink (often sugary) liquids for a few days before resuming your life. I’ve done some juice cleanses with popular brands in the past. I usually didn’t last very long, and they typically left me feeling worn down, depleted, and hangry.

This one is entirely different. I’ve done it previously with amazing results, and I’m pumped to do it again. My body has been craving a bit of a “reset.” I’ve been enjoying sugar and processed foods more frequently than usual lately, and I’ve noticed a dip in my skin’s appearance and my energy levels. It’s time to kickstart my way back into my typical, sustainable habits with this little boost.

I’m going to be starting on October 17th and would love to do this as a community if you’d like to join in! (It would be so amazing to see 250 friends doing this and supporting each other along the way!)

7-day Dr. Cabral EquiLife Detox:

Here’s more about this 7-day detox:

– It’s a liver-based detox to help reset your body, provide a break from digesting heavy foods, and potentially help your body eliminate toxins that we accumulate from our environment. It includes functional medicine ingredients and Ayurvedic herbs to support phase 1 and 2 liver detoxification.

– It’s nutrition-focused. It includes the POWERHOUSE Daily Nutritional Support powder (which I’ve had in my smoothies for the past couple of months and notice a difference in how I feel when I drink this smoothie), and meal guidelines for the remaining meals. The goal is to NOT have your body depleted of nutrients during the process.

– It can potentially help with weight loss (although that’s not a focus for me), along with anti-aging, and total body wellness.

– It’s only 7 days! When I first started working with a naturopath (back in the old days! It was like 2010), he had me do a month-long detox that was similar in format (but did not include the Ayurvedic supplements). It’s so much easier to do for 7 days, and I feel like my results were even better from the extra nutritional support. (The first two days are supplements, fruit, and smoothies only, and on day 3, you add in nutrient-dense meals using their meal guideline/template.)

Top 6 ingredients that are included in the program:

1) N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), which can stimulate the production of glutathione in the body

2) Glutathione, which is an antioxidant that can aid in healing and liver detoxification

3) Broccophane, an antioxidant that can enhance the liver’s detoxification ability

4) Alpha Lipoic Acid, another antioxidant that can improve detoxification

5) Triphala, a trifecta of Ayurvedic herbs that can support detox and digestion

6) Vitamins and minerals, to support the body and help to close nutrient gaps

Each detox kit includes the following:

Daily Nutritional Support:

This one-stop-shop for vitamins, minerals, protein, electrolytes, and antioxidants is the heart-and-soul of the Dr.Cabral Detox. With 15 grams of vegan protein, Daily Nutritional Support provides your body with much-needed energy and nutrition while your body begins to rid itself of toxins.

FM Detox:

Utilizing the most recent research in Functional Medicine, FM Detox provides the compounds necessary to support both phases of liver detoxification. Essential amino acids, antioxidants, and botanical extracts like milk thistle help the body to capture and move toxins to the liver where they can be metabolized and removed during phase two. Ingredients like dandelion root extract support the production of bile which aids in elimination. As a diuretic, dandelion root increases water supplied to the liver which facilitates toxin elimination in the urine.

AYU Detox:

Incorporating ancient Ayurvedic healing traditions that support optimal detoxification, the AM Detox helps begin the detox process. Various diuretics move water to the liver and increase the solubility of toxins. Triphala, the combination of three plants: Emblica Officinalis, Terminalia bellerica, and Terminalia chebula, have been studied for their roles in gastrointestinal health. When used in conjunction, it is suggested this powerful trio promotes the growth of beneficial gut microbes Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus, while inhibiting the growth of undesirable strains.

(You can read more and explore scientific references here.)

Things I’ve noticed after doing this detox when I started the IHP program:

– As someone who has had gallbladder concerns in the past (that I was able to resolve on my own), I always like to show my liver some extra support. I don’t have gallbladder pain at ALL anymore (I think quitting Beyond Meat helped with that, too), and after a successful first detox, I know I’ll be incorporating this into my routine at least twice a year.

– My energy was a little low the first day, but by the second afternoon, I felt amazing. I was energized, focused, my skin was glowing, and I felt great.

– It was a very easy month for my cycle. I didn’t have any cramps or PMS symptoms, and I’ve learned that the months I’m more strategic with my workouts, sleep, stress relief, and nutrition, my cycles are uneventful in the best way.

– It reset my tastebuds. When I have more sugar in my diet, things like fruit and salad start to taste muted to me. By bringing things back to basics, it reawakened my senses to what I like to food to taste like, and I could go back to fully enjoying my meals and being present at meal times.

– I don’t weigh myself regularly, but noticed that my clothes fit better after completely the detox. I felt less bloated and inflamed.

This detox is NOT for you IF:

– you currently have or are recovering from an eating disorder. Keep working on improving your relationship with food and your health, and know that I’m cheering for you and sending you my love and support.

– you are training for a strenuous event or need to maintain a super active lifestyle. For days 1-2 you want to take it easy (walks, stretching, gentle yoga, or nothing at all). If you’re not able to do that, you can do a modified version of the detox by having the smoothies for breakfast and lunch, and then a nutrient-dense dinner at night. Let me know if you have questions on how to do this!

– You have any health concerns that would prevent you from joining in.

****As always, check with your doctor before making and fitness or nutrition changes. Honor your body.

How to join + a discount code:

If you’d like to join in, you can click this link and enter FITNESSISTA20 for 20% your program! There are hundreds of amazing reviews on the site, too.

Once you sign up, join our private Facebook group here so we can stay connected and support each other along the way. Detox starts October 17.

If you have questions about the program, I’m hopping on Instagram Live with Dr. Cabral at 10am PST / 1pm EST tomorrow to answer any questions! If you have questions we can answer, leave them in the comments below!

Can’t wait to do this along with you and hear about your results. <3

weekend things

Hi hi! Happy Monday! Thank you so much to those of you who let me know you were missing the old school blogging recaps, so I’m bringing them back. It won’t be every day, but will definitely be scattered more frequently on the blog. Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with me. It’s my goal to create a blog that you want to read (that I also enjoy writing). I always appreciate your perspective, and take your thoughts and comments to heart.

It was a packed and fun-filled weekend around here. Friday afternoon, I met up with some friends to get everything ready for our school auction, and headed straight from that to a meeting with the dance moms to plan out Trunk or Treat. We have a lot to look forward to this month!

(I saw this tree at Hobby Lobby and didn’t end up buying it because it’s huge and tacky, but also SO perfect.)

We had Greek bowls for dinner, which is one of our frequent staples.

It’s grilled chicken, rice, hummus, cucumbers, olives, grape leaves, salad, and tzatziki bread. I totally forgot to add falafel to this meal, which takes it over the top. (I just air fry the frozen falafel from Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.) The kids always go wild for this one – they like crafting their own bowls- so I cling tightly to the recipes they genuinely love. (They’re not picky, but are definitely vocal about which meals they like more than others.)

Saturday morning, we cheered for P at her soccer game, dropped Liv at dance, and I headed back to the auction venue to help set up decorations and last-minute to-dos. I look forward to our school’s auction each year, especially because our community is truly amazing. The kids SO lovely and kind, their families are incredible, and the teachers are the best of the best.

We’ve been able to make friends through our school that have become like family, and I feel blessed that after some school hunting, we’ve certainly found the right spot. (We switched schools two months before the world shut down, so we didn’t get to have a true experience until last year!)

Auction attire:

(Dress is here and world to the world: SIZE UP. I didn’t read reviews as carefully as I should have and welp, it was a little painful to breathe.)

Sunday morning, we were all moving slowly, so we took it easy. I made cinnamon rolls with chicken sausage and eggs for breakfast and I filmed some workout tutorials for a 1:1 client.

We also took a little trip to Spirit Halloween and brought all of our decorations out of storage. I’ll share a pic of the finished product in Friday Faves. The older the more I’m leaning into “cute Halloween” vs. “scary/gory Halloween.”

We had family movie night with a themed cheese board (totally got the idea from this post!) to go along with it.

This week, I’m really looking forward to a lil Sakara delivery, some podcast interviews, and planning the Pilot and P’s birthday parties. I hope your morning is off to a great start and I’ll see ya soon!

Thank you for checking in on the blog today <3

xoxo
