Friday Faves

Hellooooo. Happy Friday! How are you? I hope you’ve had a wonderful week so far! The kids headed back to school this week and as much I want to say YAY I finally got work done and we’re back in a routine, nope. I missed them like crazy and I hate waking up early, so there ya go.

We did go out with a bang and had a wild card girls’ day on our last day of winter break. I took pieces of paper and wrote options on them for the day and the girls picked randomly from each set. (I saw the idea go around TikTok a while back and thought they’d like it!)

They ended up picking eegee’s for lunch, Round 1 (a huge arcade), Starbucks, Mildred & Dildred (the best local toy store) and a board game (we played Zingo and Old Maid). P told me I was a fun mom. *cry emoji*

This weekend is Liv’s birthday (11! HOW?!), Annie with the family, and getting ready for a lil trip we’re taking next week. I’d love to hear what you have going on this weekend!

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Read, watch, listen:

What’s the most helpful thing a therapist ever told you?

Matilda

We’ve all been waiting anxiously for Matilda’s release on Netflix and while I expected it to be good, I did not expect it to be that good. The music is epic (“Revolting Children” is on repeat and P has memorized 90% of the dance moves), and the storyline is amazing. Expect a tiny bit of crass language and bullying, but it had an overwhelming message of bravery, positivity, and the power of love/kindness.

Wednesday

Liv had been wanting to watch Wednesday since her friends have seen it, so after doing a bit of research (and determined no major adult themes, just scariness), I figured we could watch it together. We both loved it! It was intense, spooky (but not too gruesome. Definitely too scary for P), and I loved the casting.

Check out this week’s podcast episode here with some things you can do in the new year that have nothing to do with fitness.

House/random:

New Hatch light! I was walking with the Pilot and told him it’s stressful to wake up to the iPhone alarm. The music enrages me and I feel cortisol surge through my body as I stumble through the dark to turn off the alarm. He surprised me with this light as one of my Christmas gifts and I love it so much. It gradually simulates a sunrise and the light gets brighter, until the lovely sound of meditative flutes indicate that it’s time to wake up.

It’s been such a great way to wake up in the morning, and I’ve also signed up for their membership which has access to different sounds, meditations, and sleep stories.

It looks pretty, too!

A new essential oil love. I’m so excited to share that I’ll be partnering with NOW Foods for 2023! I have been a fan and supporter of this company for years, so I’m super pumped about this partnership. They have many high-quality supplements, beauty/health products, and natural food options, and our pantries and cabinets are filled with NOW Foods products.

They recently sent me a little goodie pack and included this essential oil, which smells like a lovely bouquet of flowers inside a spa. 😉 It’s bright and floral, and I diffuse this all day in our bedroom.

The link is here and you can use FITNESSISTA for 20% off sitewide at NOW Foods. 🙂

Fitness, health, good eats:

Comfort meals to bring to a friend in need.

Why bursts of effort during the day may be beneficial.

How to set up your Peloton bike (or any spin bike!).

We’re doing another round of the EquiLife detox as a community starting on January 22! Get your kit here if you’d like to join (use FITNESSISTA20 for 20% off) and all of the details are in this post.

Fashion + beauty:

This half zip. I’ve been wearing it a lot with leggings and low-top sneakers. It’s an oversized fit, but still runs large. I sized down and it still has the perfect amount of slouchiness.

Betsy got me this liquid blush and the color is perfection. It lasts all day and is super easy to apply.

Happy Friday, friends!

Community detox round 2 details

Sharing the details about an upcoming Dr. Cabral 7-day detox. Sharing the details here and how to join in if you’d like!

Hi friends! How’s the morning going? I LOVED reading about your goals for the upcoming year. Please keep me updated on your progress and if you have any post requests or topics I can cover to support you, please comment or send me an email gina@fitnessista.com.

It’s hard to believe that holiday break is over and the kids are headed back to school this week. While I’m devastated – I enjoyed sleeping in and low-key days a liiiittle too much – it’s going to be nice to get back into a routine. We have a lot of things to look forward to over the next few months, including a Disney cruise, a trip to Disneyland, and a top-secret trip (it’s part of Liv’s birthday surprise).

One of the things I’m also looking forward to this month is another EquiLife 7-day detox. I felt SO GREAT after the last one, and it’s been a few months, so I’m ready for another round. Usually every January, I do some type of reset. Sometimes I cut out sugar and alcohol entirely for the month, other times, I’ll just focus on solid nutrition. It feels amazing to get back in the habit of eating (and craving) vegetables and fresh foods, especially after the joyful avalanche of holiday sweets and cocktails.

Moderation is my jam now, especially since the days of depriving myself are long gone. If I want a sweet treat or something more indulgent, I eat it and enjoy every bite. It’s been a festive couple of months, and I’m feeling a bit sluggish and craving sugar more than usual. Usually by the time New Years rolls around, I’m looking forward to making my way back to more *normal* eating. I love to kickstart it with a little reset and this year, I’m doing this liver-based functional medicine detox.

SO many of you joined me last time, so I wanted to invite you to join in if you’d like to go for another round. The fun starts January 22, so you can order your kit now and you’ll be ready to go!

Here’s more about this 7-day detox:

– It’s a liver-based detox to help reset your body, provide a break from digesting heavy foods, and potentially help your body eliminate toxins that we accumulate from our environment. It includes functional medicine ingredients and Ayurvedic herbs to support phase 1 and 2 liver detoxification.

– It’s nutrition-focused. It includes the POWERHOUSE Daily Nutritional Support powder (which I’ve had in my smoothies for the past couple of months and notice a difference in how I feel when I drink this smoothie), and meal guidelines for the remaining meals. The goal is to NOT have your body depleted of nutrients during the process.

– It can potentially help with weight loss (although that’s not a focus for me), along with anti-aging, and total body wellness.

– It’s only 7 days! When I first started working with a naturopath (back in the old days! It was like 2010), he had me do a month-long detox that was similar in format (but did not include the Ayurvedic supplements). It’s so much easier to do for 7 days, and I feel like my results were even better from the extra nutritional support. (The first two days are supplements and smoothies only – I typically add in some berries – and on day 3, you add in nutrient-dense meals using their meal guideline/template.) It’s also very flexible; many people start the plan on day 3 (smoothie in the am, vegan lunch, Paleo dinner) and have excellent results.

Top 6 ingredients that are included in the program:

1) N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), which can stimulate the production of glutathione in the body

2) Glutathione, which is an antioxidant that can aid in healing and liver detoxification

3) Broccophane, an antioxidant that can enhance the liver’s detoxification ability

4) Alpha Lipoic Acid, another antioxidant that can improve detoxification

5) Triphala, a trifecta of Ayurvedic herbs that can support detox and digestion

6) Vitamins and minerals, to support the body and help to close nutrient gaps

Each detox kit includes the following:

Daily Nutritional Support:

This one-stop-shop for vitamins, minerals, protein, electrolytes, and antioxidants is the heart-and-soul of the Dr.Cabral Detox. With 15 grams of vegan protein, Daily Nutritional Support provides your body with much-needed energy and nutrition while your body begins to rid itself of toxins.

FM Detox:

Utilizing the most recent research in Functional Medicine, FM Detox provides the compounds necessary to support both phases of liver detoxification. Essential amino acids, antioxidants, and botanical extracts like milk thistle help the body to capture and move toxins to the liver where they can be metabolized and removed during phase two. Ingredients like dandelion root extract support the production of bile which aids in elimination. As a diuretic, dandelion root increases water supplied to the liver which facilitates toxin elimination in the urine.

AYU Detox:

Incorporating ancient Ayurvedic healing traditions that support optimal detoxification, the AM Detox helps begin the detox process. Various diuretics move water to the liver and increase the solubility of toxins. Triphala, the combination of three plants: Emblica Officinalis, Terminalia bellerica, and Terminalia chebula, have been studied for their roles in gastrointestinal health. When used in conjunction, it is suggested this powerful trio promotes the growth of beneficial gut microbes Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus, while inhibiting the growth of undesirable strains.

(You can read more and explore scientific references here.)

Things I’ve noticed after doing this detox twice:

– As someone who has had gallbladder concerns in the past (that I was able to resolve on my own), I always like to show my liver some extra support. I don’t have gallbladder pain at ALL anymore (I think quitting Beyond Meat helped with that, too), and after two successful detoxes, I know I’ll be incorporating this into my routine at least twice a year.

– My energy was a little low the first day, but by the second afternoon, I felt amazing. I was energized, focused, my skin was glowing, and I felt great.

– It was a very easy month for my cycle. I didn’t have any cramps or PMS symptoms, and I’ve learned that the months I’m more strategic with my workouts, sleep, stress relief, and nutrition, my cycles are uneventful in the best way.

– It reset my tastebuds. When I have more sugar in my diet, things like fruit and salad start to taste muted to me. By bringing things back to basics, it reawakened my senses to what I like to food to taste like, and I could go back to fully enjoying my meals and being present at meal times.

– I don’t weigh myself regularly, but noticed that my clothes fit better after completely the detox. I felt less bloated and inflamed. You can read my recap of the last detox plus the recipes I used here!

This detox is NOT for you IF:

– you currently have or are recovering from an eating disorder. Keep working on improving your relationship with food and your health, and know that I’m cheering for you and sending you my love and support.

– you are training for a strenuous event or need to maintain a super active lifestyle. For days 1-2 you want to take it easy (walks, stretching, gentle yoga, or nothing at all). If you’re not able to do that, you can do a modified version of the detox by having the smoothies for breakfast and lunch, and then a nutrient-dense dinner at night. Let me know if you have questions on how to do this!

– You have any health concerns that would prevent you from joining in.

****As always, check with your doctor before making and fitness or nutrition changes. Honor your body.*****

How to join + a discount code:

If you’d like to join in, you can click this link and enter FITNESSISTA20 for 20% your program! There are hundreds of amazing reviews on the site, too.

Once you sign up, join our virtual wellness group so we can stay connected and support each other along the way. Detox starts January 22.

The Great Book Review of 2022

The Great Book Review of 2022: Sharing the books I read in 2022 and whether I’d recommend adding them to your collection.

Hi hi! How’s the day going so far? I hope you’re having a wonderful morning! I’m looking forward to a movie with the crew and catching a hot yoga class later today. I’d love to hear what you have going on!

In today’s post, I’m sharing almost all of the books I read last year. (I had a a few audiobooks and a handful of DNF books I didn’t type up because they weren’t memorable or enjoyable.) Reading is one of my very favorite hobbies and I’m so glad I set a goal a couple of years ago to read more often. It’s definitely something I plan on doing in 2023, too!

Here’s a list of almost all of the books I read last year:

The Great Book Review of 2022

The Book of Lost Names

Ok friends, this is it. My #1 book of 2022. It was poignant, intriguing, devoting, heartwarming, and hopeful all at the same time. It’s beautifully-written and an absolute page turner. I finished it in two days! 10/10 recommend, especially if you enjoy historical fiction.

All Things New

I was unsure about adding this to the recap because obviously we don’t all have the same beliefs, and I never want anyone to feel isolated or left out. One of my favorite things about having ya’ll as virtual BFFs is the fact that we have a ton in common, and probably some differences, too. It makes life more enjoyable and exciting to be surrounded by various perspectives and viewpoints.

In the end, I wanted to add it because it’s been a part of my life lately, and I’m sure many of you would enjoy hearing about this rec.

I’ve been going through this Bible study on 2 Corinthians for the past month and a half and have already learned so much from it. As someone who always felt intimidated by reading the Bible, this has been a great introduction to it, especially since I’m able to study and discuss with such a lovely and brilliantly intelligent group of ladies. We meet weekly and chat about what we’ve learned, and the conversations have been so meaningful for me.

If you’ve been wanting to read the Bible, I highly recommend doing a study like this as a way to gain more knowledge and understanding. I feel like I’m actually learning instead of simply reading passages, and this way, I’m more easily able to apply these principles to my life. We’ll finish this study early next month and cap it off with a celebratory lunch before starting our next study.

I’m Glad My Mom Died

What a turn in topics, eh?

TBH, the title of this book kept me from wanting to read it, despite the overwhelming positive reviews. “She’s GLAD her mom died?” It’s… a lot.

But, this has ended up being one of the best books I’ve read (listened to this one on Audible and highly recommend) in a long time. It’s profound, heartbreaking, optimistic, hilarious, and beautifully written. Just as a trigger warning, it does include some heavy topics like mental and physical abuse, and eating disorders. While these are prevalent themes in the book, it wasn’t overwhelmingly graphic to read. 10/10 would recommend.

November 9

I’ve learned the Colleen Hoover is hit or miss for me… and this one was a miss. I just didn’t get as wrapped into the plot, which had a lot of potential. Her writing often feels lackluster and doesn’t allow me to become truly invested in all of the characters she creates. 3/10.

The Cancer Revolution

I picked up a copy of The Cancer Revolution because I follow Dr. Connealy on Instagram and LOVE her account. She shares so much valuable info, and I think it’s fascinating to be able to follow someone who treats cancer frequently, and successfully. She uses a blend of alternative and traditional therapies, including IV vitamin infusions, oxygen therapy, red light, detox strategies, and sauna, in addition to low-dose chemotherapy. I wanted to read this book because I’m all about empowering myself with extra tools and information, and found so many valuable resources in this book for preventing cancer, treating cancer, potentially helpful supplements and more. 10/10 recommend.

Go-To Dinners

I was so thrilled when my very favorite released a new cookbook. You can always depend on Ina for recipes that are tested meticulously and taste amazing. I have around a 99% success rate with Ina recipes, and she’s my go-to when I’m looking for a dinner party recipe or crowdpleaser. This cookbook is focused on go-to dinners that can be made fairly quickly, along with sides and desserts. The desserts selection is worth it alone (a glorious chocolate tart and cupcakes), and I can’t wait to add some of these new meals to the rotation.

11/22/63

You guys. This book was WILD. I listened to the audio version and the narrator was fantastic. I loved the different voices for characters and truly brought life to this Butterfly Effect-ish story. The premise of the book is that a man named Jake Epping is tasked with using a portal to go back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. In the process, he also wants to save and change the life of someone he knows. Jake learns the ramifications of altering the past, in addition to trying to decide if he wants to return to the present day at all.

I’ve never read anything by Stephen King before, since I typically stay away from *scary* or gruesome books. This book was intense, and some parts were hard for me to listen to, but I can see why Stephen King is so popular lol. My only problem with this one is that is it LONG. The guy is wordy. He probably could have ditched about 200 pages in the middle. At the same time, the character development is so deep, and I still find myself thinking about it (especially the ending!). I’d give it a 9/10. I want to watch the series on Hulu now, too!

The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan

I ordered this book after Lisa Moskovitz, RD was a guest on the podcast. I enjoyed hearing about her philosophy and wanted to see what her eating plan guidelines included, especially since I’m often looking for new recs to share with clients. This one is AMAZING. It’s simple enough for beginners to follow, but also will encourage more experienced macro trackers to approach it in a new way.

You can check it out here and use the code CORE20 for a discount.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist seemed to me like one of those books that “everyone has to read.” It’s received overwhelming positive reviews, is frequently recommended in my online book groups, and I appreciated it was rejected by various publishing houses before becoming a worldwide sensation. It reminds me of a fable, and is very short and easy to read. It’s based on the story of a shepard named Santiago who seeks out to find treasure and various characters and situations he encounters on the way. Despite obstacles during his journey, he remains dedicated to achieving his “Personal Legend.”

The Alchemist demonstrates that the journey can sometimes be more important that the destination, the importance of staying committed to our goals, and that our desired destination sometimes isn’t what we truly need or expect.  While I did enjoy the message behind the book, it’s not in my top five favorite books. I felt like I could have read the Cliff’s Notes synopsis and been completely satisfied. My rating: 6/10

The Obesity Code

I’ve heard Dr. Jason Fung speak on a few podcasts and really appreciate his perspective and knowledge, so I was excited to read his book, The Obesity Code. Just a heads up, if you order this, make sure you receive the correct version! I ordered a copy from this page, and received a book that was actually written by Dr. Jason K. FUNG, aka a bot based out of another country. I’ll share some of the text on IG stories, but the Pilot refused to let me return it because we were cackling with laughter reading it.

Sooooo once you have the correct version, I highly recommend. He explores the tie between insulin resistance and many of the common health issues we face today as a society, as well as an action plan for how to maintain more stable blood sugar and improve insulin response. He also dives into obesity and why weight loss can be so difficult to maintain, as it diminishes your metabolic baseline. It was a valuable and enjoyable read, but some portions were redundant, so I give it a 9/10.

It Ends with Us

My first Colleen Hoover book and I was excited to see if it lived up to the hype! I read the entire book in one sitting (on our flight to Hawaii), and was locked in the entire time. Even though the plot is very good (trigger warning: contains domestic abuse), I found her writing to be lackluster. Don’t throw anything at me, but after reading so much vivid and descriptive storytelling over the past couple of years, it felt like there was so much untapped potential. Even so, I’ll absolutely be reading more of her books. 7/10

April book recap

One Italian Summer

This was probably my second favorite read of the summer (next to Book Lovers). I also read this book in one sitting (the flight home from Hawaii) and it was magical. I LOVED that it was set in the Amalfi Coast (I’m drying to go back) and I really love this author’s style of writing. She also wrote In Five Years, which I highly recommend. 10/10 if you’re looking for a breezy and enjoyable read.

The Bodyguard

This was a Book of the Month find, and while I wasn’t super excited about the plot, I figured I’d give it a whirl. I LOVED this book. The writing was witty, the storyline was sweet and unexpected, and the whole book was a lighthearted treat. If you’re looking for a light cupcake of a book, definitely check this one out. 10/10

Book Lovers

If you’re looking for a cupcake of a book for summer (light, fluffy, sweet and satisfying), this is the one. It’s one of the most feel-good books I’ve read in a long time and I didn’t want it to end. I LIVED for the witty banter, the Sweet Home Alabama vibe to the whole situation, and the fact that while it was simple, it still had me fully intrigued and trying to figure out how it would end. 10/10 would recommend diving into this one this summer!

Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow

This cookbook, by Shalene Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky, includes so many mouthwatering and healthy recipes that are designed to be nutrient-dense, yet cooked quickly. These are the exact type of recipes I love to make on weeknights for the family, and there are so many new ideas and recipes in here. I’m so pumped to try these! I’ve been in a food rut for a while – I just feel sick of cooking and uninspired – and this made me excited to plan this week’s menu. We’re making Superhero Muffins, Power bowls with a green goddess tahini dressing, a frittata, and pesto pasta with sardines this week.

And the Mountains Echoed

I read this book when Liv was a baby, and didn’t realize it until I was a few chapters in. At this point, I was fully committed and decided to re-read the book, which is something I never do. It was interesting to read these pages again older and hopefully wiser. Khaled Housseini is brilliantly talented and he has a way of drawing you into a story, and breaking your heart open while also filling it with hope. (I also highly recommend The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns if you haven’t read them.) This book was poignant, devastating, and explores the way our choices affect those around us. 10/10 would recommend, especially if you enjoy historical fiction and plots that cover a variety of characters’ perspectives.

In Five Years

I remember Julie recommending In Five Years, so when I saw it at Target before our Disney trip, I figured it would be good travel reading. I BLASTED through this thing within a couple of days. The plot drew me in right away. And I felt like I couldn’t read fast enough to find out what happens. 10/10 would recommend for a summer book!

Deep Nutrition

Deep Nutrition was highly recommended by Mia and a few other RDs and health professionals on IG, so I knew I wanted to read it. It was a long one (400+ pages) and I didn’t want it to end. I feel like it was incredibly well-constructed, with lots of citations and data to back up the author’s claims. And it was one of those books that completely changed my viewpoint of a few different nutritional foundations. (Even ones I thought to be true! I definitely recommend reading this one with an open mind!)

We are living in the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. What has changed? The addition of so many toxins in our environment and foods has led to a cascade of detrimental health effects. Including increased rates of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. The author demonstrates how a return back to our ancestors’ style of eating is one of the easiest things we can do to promote health, vitality, and healing. She explains the harmful effects of refined sugar, inflammatory seed oils. And how to eat what she calls The Human Diet, based on nutritional foundations that have been used all over the world for centuries.

The only part of this book that I didn’t love was the initial section on how our grandparents’ diet affects our beauty and face symmetry. It just felt a little superficial to me – and a little frustrating, since we obviously can’t control the lifestyles of those who were born before us – and wasn’t really why I wanted to read this book. All in all, I’d give it a 9/10. I wish she included more recipes!

Genius Kitchen

I was so excited to order Genius Kitchen, because I’ve followed Max Lugavere on Instagram for a while and also love his podcast. TBH, I was curious to see how the recipes would be designed, because I feel like a lot of “health cookbooks” are bland and gross. I end up having to add citrus zest, seasonings, garlic (why do they hate garlic?!), ANYTHING to give it a bit of a flavor profile. This book has been surprising in the best possible way! We’ve had a handful of recipes, and they’ve all be healthy, beautiful, and flavorful. I was blown away! I definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for new meals to add to the rotation. 9/10

(I’d also like to thank this book for helping me discover that the girls LOVE sardines. I bought a huge pack from Costco and they’ve eaten them all haha.)

Loving What Is

Loving What Is has already changed my life. It gives you such a beautiful perspective on how to be present. And how our thoughts aren’t always necessarily *true.* I only wish I would have read it sooner. Particularly when I was dealing with postpartum depression. And when we were going through some challenging times in our marriage. If you haven’t read this one, I highly recommend the audio version. The book is based on four questions, which the author dubs “The Work.” Asking yourself these four questions, especially when you’re feeling down or overwhelmed, is a helpful way to bring you back to the present moment and what is actually true. 10/10 would recommend.

The Postmistress of Paris

This book took me forever to read – I’ve basically crashed into bed each night lately- but it was incredible. I ordered it through Book of the Month (<— still loving my subscription) and is based on a true story. If you’re a fan of historical fiction, I highly recommend it.

Why We Get Sick

This book explores the prevalence of insulin sensitivity and how metabolic dysfunction is linked to many common illnesses and health concerns. The author does an incredible job explaining the role of insulin in our body and how various lifestyles and eating patterns can contribute to insulin sensitivity, and also what you can do about it. He gives lots of lifestyle tips, nutrition ideas, and empowers readers to make positive decisions for their metabolic health. 10/10 would recommend.

Wonder

This is part of our mom-daughter book club. Liv recently finished this book and passed it onto me. I just finished it, and now we’re going to watch the movie together. I LOVE this idea because it gives us the opportunity to connect over amazing books and would say that it motivates her to read, but this kid loves to read and blasts through chapter books. She’s really been interested in history (she read pretty much all of the Who Was series last year) and is almost done reading The Diary of Anne Frank.

I love that this book has such a strong focus on empathy and care for those who may have unique circumstances. It also reiterates an important lesson that even though we may look different on the outside, we’re all the same on the inside, and the fact that kindness can go a long way. 10/10 would recommend.

Looking back on 2022 and my goals for 2023

TBH I’m always a little hesitant to write this type of post after I dubbed 2020 the “year of travel” but here we go….

Hi friends! Happy Monday and HAPPY NEW YEAR! *throws confetti into the air* I’m back and feeling refreshed after some time with the fam. We got together with friends, watched movies, enjoyed some girl time (pedicures, boba teas, shopping, baking), and are back in the swing of things this week. I hope you had a wonderful blurry week between Christmas and New Years, and hope you had a safe and happy New Years’ celebration.

(New Years Eve at the Desert Museum)

For today’s post, I thought it would be a good time to look back on the year, assess how I did with my goals, and set some goals for 2023.

I tend to have mixed feelings about resolutions. I’m the type of person who often thinks, “If you want to change something, change it now, instead of waiting for the pressure of a looming date or holiday,” but at the same time, there’s something exciting and motivating about a bright, shiny, new year.

I make changes and set goals throughout the year, but this is the time that I usually set big business and financial goals, health and personal goals, and brainstorm a theme for the year: a mantra I can keep in mind when things feel challenging or tough. My mantra for this year is “gratitude.” Having a daily gratitude practice has made a big impact in my mood and mindset.

Here’s a lil recap of what went down in 2022.

Looking back on 2022 and my goals for 2023

I’m SO thankful that we were able to travel more this year! We went to some of our favorite places, like Mt. Lemmon, Great Wolf Lodge (a few times), San Diego, Disneyland, San Diego again, and Vegas, and also traveled to some new places, like exploring Waikiki as a family. Hawaii ended up being my travel highlight of the year, and the girls agree; they’re already asking to go back.

What to Do and Where to Stay in Waikiki

The Pilot took command of another one of the squadrons here. While his workload has been busy, I’m so proud of him and the type of leader he is. We’ve had a lot more squadron events and military fun over the past year.

Professionally, I launched Total Body Reset with Mia, kept creating Fit Team content for my amazing members, finishing my Integrative Health Practitioner certification, started coaching more 1:1 clients (virtual and in-person), and it was my highest affiliate income year to date. I only partner with a super small amount of companies, and I love spreading the word about their amazing products.

I did some formal business coaching this year with Dan and Nicole Culver, attended a JillFit mastermind (Jill was my coach all year last year!), and am looking forward to masterminding with some other friends in this space.

Beautycounter was an area that saw a bit of a slip in 2022. I didn’t have as much time to devote to it as usual, and it’s one of my goals to continue to grow my Beautycounter business. It’s an incredible company doing great things, and I’m fortunate to have some friends on my Beautycounter team, too!

Health-wise, it’s been a good year (knock on wood) and I feel like I hit my stride with some of the things I’ve been working on. I drastically cut back alcohol intake – you can read more about my journey here! – and have been walking Maisey daily. It’s done wonders for my mental health and I don’t have to think about hitting 10k steps each day. It happens pretty easily with a workout + a daily walk with Mazer.

I’m still doing my usual Fit Team workouts, teaching barre, and taking classes, like hot yoga, F45, barre, Sculpt Society, and hopping on the Peloton from time to time. I’ve been consistent with meditation, journaling on my PEMF Go Mat, and getting solid sleep at night.

Personally, I continue to be thankful for our friends and family here in Tucson. We have our tribe of parent friends, the kids have their incredible best buddies, and I joined a Bible study last summer that has changed my life. I grew up Catholic, but have never studied the Bible in this capacity, and am so blessed to have a group of insightful, wise, encouraging, and kind ladies in my corner.

This is also the year that I truly feel like I found some balance and some breathing room with our routine. I started taking 1-2 days off each week, and started booking little open blocks or fun things to look forward to, like a hike with a friend or a date night with the Pilot.

It can feel like you’re in an endless slog of work, child wrangling and chores, especially if you solo parent for days/weeks/months at a time, and doing this has increased my happiness and productivity. Our babysitter started coming over the weekend, just for three hours, and it’s been a lifesaver to get ahead on content and backend blog work for the upcoming week.

Some of my goals for 2023:

Continue to post content here, on Instagram, and TikTok

I’m not going anywhere here on the blog, and have so many ideas for posts this year (and more, thanks to your survey responses!). I also enjoy creating short video content, so I’ll still be posting on IG, and start to post more frequently on TikTok. I fought the platform for so long, but I know that’s where people are hanging out, and I love that it’s less curated than IG.

Finish my IHP Level 2 certification!

I’m absolutely loving the certification process and am so excited to be able to run the big 5 labs for clients, friends, and family members (and myself!).

If you’re looking to explore your health passions or start a new career, I highly recommend the IHP program. You can check out this post about my experience so far.

Grow the Fit Team community and launch a group coaching program with functional lab testing

I want to continue to build Fit Team – the community is everything and the workouts are fiiiiiire – and launch a group program focused on health foundations, along with optional functional lab testing once I finish IHP2. If you’re curious about receiving the info first, hop on the wait list here.

Submit another book proposal

Each time I’ve write a book, I’m like, “WHY DID I DO THIS TO MYSELF?” but I have so many ideas for this new concept. I’ve been chatting with an editor to craft the perfect title and perspective for this one, so we’ll see how it goes.

Take the crew to Europe

We are starting to plan this for summer 2023! The kids are PUMPED. A trip to Disneyland Paris is on the books, along with Rome and (hopefully!) Madrid.

Finally rip out the dang upstairs carpet

I’m pretty sure I’ve said this for two years but it’s happening, even if it’s me and a box shredder. I can’t stand it anymore lol.

Keep it up with the podcast

I was talking with a blog friend and she did some digging on my podcast, and told me it’s in the top 0.5% globally of all podcasts. And then she laughed at me because I’m pretty casual about the whole thing. I post when I have content – I aim for weekly, but it doesn’t always happen – often forget to share it on IG stories, edit it myself, etc. So this was a fun push to keep at it, and explore more potential with the podcast. I’ve lined up my first sponsors for the year, too!

Continue to make reading a focus

I’m writing the great book recap right now (it will be live tomorrow!), but it’s looking like I read around 24 books this year. It was under my goal of three per month, because I spent some book time studying for IHP. My goal is still at least three books per month for 2023. Reading is something I genuinely enjoy, so it’s good motivation to set aside time for reading each day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes until I crash out.

Get back into singing…or something

Our symphony had a season this year, they invited everyone back to the choir, and we had to re-audition for our spots. I learned Beethoven’s 9th, in German, went in and got my spot back, and then realized a few days later that I wouldn’t be able to participate for personal reasons. I’m hoping I’ll be able to return next year, because I really miss it, but at the same time, it’s been so long that I can’t help but wonder if this is a sign to do something else. I’m just looking for something to fill my musical/creative cup, like singing, piano, or dancing, so here’s hoping there’s some of that in 2023.

Continue to work to be a more patient, joyful, and loving mom and wife, aka my most important goal

I want the people in my life to know how much I genuinely love them unconditionally, and while I know this in my heart, it’s important to show them. I remind myself to be more present, patient, and enjoy the people around me as much as I can. I enjoy our babies so much, and being their mom is my favorite thing in the whole world. It’s my purpose for them to feel that as much as possible <3

So tell me, friends: are you setting goals for the new year?

What’s a professional, personal, and health goal for 2023?  I LOVE hearing about your goals, so if you’re feeling up to it, please share a few in the comments!
